I'm trying to get my Kubota Z500 two cylinder engine started after doing a piston ring job and cylinder head valve job.
I set the valve clearance by watching one valve start to move and adjusting clearance on the other. There is a bit of blowby, but the rings haven't seated yet.

If I line up TDC marks on the flywheel, both number one cylinder valves can be set to proper clearance at same time, right?

Additionally, if valves are correctly set, has anyone been able to successfully use ether to get things started without blowing up a piston? Any other tips to get this hunk of iron started would be appreciated.

I always adjust the clearance on one valve when the other valve is at its max downward stroke, not when it just starts to move. This guarantees that the cam is as flat as it's going to be when you make the adjustment.
Are you certain you are getting fuel into the cylinder? Everything has to be bled and the injection pump has to be producing enough pressure to overcome the spring poppet in the injector. The last 2 cylinder I had problems with I actually took the injectors off, and reattached with the lines swiveled out pointing off the engine, bled, and cranked to make darn sure I was getting fuel pulses.
You could also consider doing a compression test even though your rings aren't worn in yet. You need something like 180psi minimum to ignite the diesel.

Donno if you've had experience with 2cyls but expect a bunch more vibration than 3+cyl diesels
