I was wondering how useful are scarifier and grading blade on a landscape rake? I am planning on using the rake to maintain a gravel driveway on a hill, do some raking of downed limps, re-grade some land I have cleared. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Only for light work. It sounds like you have some serious grading that needs to be done, I would consider an additional implement or 2. Depending on how long and shape- terrain of a drive you have, you may want to consider a land plane grading scraper. (LPGS) Actually a good box blade will do your heavy grading and scarifying.

Pictures of what you will be working with will help us recommend the proper implements for you tasks at hand. ;)

If you have potholes scarifiers are the ticket...to really fix problematic potholes the key is to disturb the the surrounding area as well as below the hole...then fill with suitable material...just filling or grading over is a short term fix...

Heavy York (brand) Landscape Rakes, such as the York R1, are often used in road construction in the NE states.

For gravel road maintenance, as suggested by /PINE, above, you should be happy.

For re-grading of land you may be expecting too much, but you have not provided any details of the task.

Do you have Four-Wheel-Drive on your Deere 990?

YORK LANDSCAPE RAKES, HOW TO PERFORM BETTER, FASTER, LOWER COST SOIL-WORKING, GRADING AND FINISHING.

Thousands of York Landscape Rakes are in use by landscape and seeding contractors, nurseries, park maintenance departments, forestry departments, golf courses, cemeteries, race tracks, beaches, resorts highway departments and recreation centers to name a few.

Construction contractors use York Landscape Rakes on super highway projects, airports, schools and institutions, churches, industrial sites and housing developments.

Paving contractors use them for development and preparation of parking areas, drives, etc.

Homeowners use them for driveway and private road maintenance. ATV riders use them for trail maintenance and construction.

As a matter of fact, uses for the York Landscape Rake appear to be limited only by the imagination and resourcefulness of their owners. Many are now employed in applications never dreamed of by York when the first York Landscape Rake was developed in 1921!

What will a York Rake do?

Remove stones, roots, debris, and leaves.
Spread topsoil quickly, evenly.
Spread base material.
Grade, level, pulverize and mulch.
Ditch and Terrace.
Backfill.

These are only a few of the many things a York Rake can be used for.

The uses for a York Rake are enhanced and broadened when the optional attachments are combined into a unit. The unit becomes the 鉄wiss Army Knife of site preparation tools.

Optional attachments include:

Caster Wheels to regulate the working depth and float the rake.

Scarifier to loosen material before grading and raking. The scarifier folds up out of the way when not in use.

Flip-Up Blade speeds leveling, ditching and terracing.

End Boots convert the blade into an effective earthmover.

The York Landscape Rake Unit is practically the only tool needed on most soil preparation jobs. The York Scarifier and Blade team up to prepare an area for raking. The scarifier rips up hard ground, ridges and packed soil. (User tip: To get maximum penetration from the scarifier shorten the top link on the three-point hitch, this will raise the rake off the ground and allow the scarifier to dig to its deepest depth.) The Blade cuts down high spots and fills depressions. The York Landscape Rake follows to distribute loose material, grade, level and remove oversize stone and debris. Angle adjustments permit discharging material to either side. (User tip: When angled and using caster wheels best results will be achieved if the wheel closest to the tractor is higher off the ground than the one farthest from the tractor. This allows the end of the rake closest to the tractor to rake heavier than the end farthest from the tractor, creating a better screening action as the material moves across the front of the rake.) The vibrating action of the Rake Teeth breaks up sod and mulches the soil. (User tip: The faster you can go the better the vibrating action will be.) Pulverized soil passes between the teeth, while large stones and debris are gathered into a row. This screening action produces an ideal finished surface, ready for seeding or sod.

The York Flip-Up Blade is also a low-cost means of converting the Rake to a ditching and terracing tool. End Boots increase the Blade capacity and efficiency as an earthmover.

Years of development and improvement have gone into today's York Rake. It is serious tool for serious jobs.

Jeff9366, just to be clear, what you posted is pulled from A York publication?? :confused3: My experience has been that the single do all implement does not. Might do it all, might even do a single chore well, but to do them all well simply is not realistic.

Just my :2cents:

I'll agree with much of Jeff's post. Here in upstate NY and in upstate Pa. almost all rural dirt roads are maintained with a 7 or 8 foot York rake with a scarifier attached. I don't believe they are the ticket for serious reshaping of a road or grading areas, for seasonal maintenance they are tough to beat. I use my little 5 foot rake (without scarifiers) on 700' of driveway every year-I don't have potholes, but usually accumulate some plowing gouges and ridges throughout the winter.

YES

My experience has been that the single do all implement do not.

I AGREE WITH YOU.

Brian: There have been very few occasions I have not agreed with your posts.

The few time I have disagreed, more experience has generally proved you right.

So for a mere $5837 + shipping costs the OP can have his do all implement. And it only takes how long to switch over to each function? I stand by my original post, get the different implements that are required to do the job right and be done with it. Beside the one implement doing everything, it is a hassle to switch and the darn thing is very cost prohibitive.

Just another :2cents:, at this rate I may be :2cents: less for awhile. ;)

generally always see folks barely getting by with one implement, but generally have 2 to 3 implements to get a nice professional look and really make things easier and less time consuming.

TNT (top and tilt) (top link gets a hyd cylinder, side link for 3pt hitch gets a hyd cylinder) can be a big thing for gravel / rock driveways, and in that making it much easier to getting a crown and keeping a crown on the drive, along with feathering out the last bit of rock/gravel.

york rakes, rear blades, box blades, LPGS (land plane grader scrapper), FEL (front end loader general duty bucket with and without tooth bar), something with sacriffer teeth.

each of the above has there own pro's con's. some move only going straight, some move stuff to one side, some dig deeper and break up initial hard compaction, some sift dirt/rocks so rocks are on top, some phyiscally allow you to move material from one area to other area, to help reshape/rebuild. some can be used for snow pushing, some can be used to remove rocks in yard come spring, that were placed during winter snow pushing. some can be used for yard work, some are better for digging dirt and moving dirt.

it is a mix and match game. every situation is different. there is no wrong or right way. just some things make certain tasks easier and quicker to do, with better final outcomes.
