Howdy from Mississippi, first post attempt. I will be managing @ 50 acres, first chore is to build a house, maintain 1,000ft driveway, landscape, mow abt 10 acres, manage brush piles pushed up by the bulldozer when clearing for the house. At this point my choices are a 2wd TC30 w/FEL for $7k or a YM 2500 4wd w/FEL for $9k. Which would be the better choice?

I appreciate the helpful attitude I have seen on TBN and look forward to becoming a part of this web community.

Thanks,
Wade

with a FEL; go 4 wd only and get rear tires filled.

From one Mississippian to another. I just traded from a 3000 ford diesel to a Kubota L3130 4wd with loader and box blade. The ford was around 8 to 10 more horse power, but I can tell you the Kubota will work circles around it, in almost anything I'm doing including mowing. The 4wd with the loader is a must. The more I use this machine the more I am impressed what it can do. Defiantly get the 4wd.

Are you sure your prices and specs and prices aren't reversed?
The YM2500 was not avail as a 4wd.
If It says 2500 and is 4wd, it is probably a different model with YM2500 Sheet metal on it.

Beetle here,
Thanks for the help from all. CARNEYM, how far from Fulton are you? BTI, I very well could be mistaken on the model number, I am looking for something in the 28-30hp range. Is $9k a good price for a 28-30hp, 4wd with FEL? Thanks again

Like someone else mentioned, the YM2500 was never availible in 4WD. Could you possibley have the details of the TC30 and YM2500 mixed up. If it was a TC30 4WD for $7000 or even $9000 that would be a good deal. I am not trying to open a can of worms, but it is my opinion that with tractors this size 4WD is better when using a loader. Can you still use a FEL on a small 2 wheel drive? Yes. Does it work as well as 4 wheel drive? Not even close.

Brent,
As it turned out it was a Ford 1500 series (1516 or something like that) and I tested it this afternoon. The little tractor was nice, 4 forward gears, 3 ranges, pwr steering, and the Bush Hog brand loader was plenty stout. It had rained here today so I played around in the mud with it a little. I picked up a bucket full of wet dirt from a pile and when I tried to back away I spun and almost had to drop the load to move, even with the diff lock engaged. I have been using dad's Kubota L2800 4wd w/loader, it would have never even spun a tire under same or worse conditions. I am 100% convinced that 4wd is a necessity with FEL. I will keep searching until I find the right tractor for the right price. Thanks for everyone's help.

I'd strongly recommend 4wd. I haven't gotten mine stuck yet and I'm on nasty clay. On Valentine's Day I was lucky enough to spend the entire day removing snow up to 4' high from my driveway and neighbors' driveways. I was able to drive it through very deep snow and right into the snow drifts. I don't have filled tires but this is a grey market tractor with those very aggressive rice tires on the rears. The fronts have been changed to R1s (Ag tires). I did have my rear blade mounted on the back and was using that to push snow under 16" deep or so. I'm sure it added necessary weight also for using the loader in those conditions. When using the loader and forgetting to put it in 4wd first, I get stuck pretty easily, which tells me 2wd and compact tractors with loaders are probably not a good mix.
