I recently did some work on the brakes of my YM240D. The left side was full of oil. I replaced the seal and no more leaks. I also replaced the shoes and springs with replacements from Hoye. The right side works really well. However, the left side is adjusted as far as it will go and still does not stop well. I have the pedals locked together. If I stop hard the right side will lock up but not the left. If I am gentle on the brakes I can stop just fine, but it is obviously a concern especially since my property is hilly.

It seems to me that the cams are worn out somehow. But I'm confused because the manual gives a spec for the cam diameter and I'm close to half that. I find it hard to believe the cams have worn that much. Plus, if they were to the spec in the manual there would not be a ridge to keep the shoe positioned inside the cam.

If I work the left brake on it's own I can feel the cam attached to the lever spinning all the way around so the shoe starts to retract. I can see that one edge of the left side fixed cam is rounded.

The only solution I can come up with at this point is to use some JB Weld to reshape the cams. And I'm not sure if that will actually work and last.

Has anyone else had to deal with this?

Yes, indirectly. When I bought the first YM186D (not the one I have now) I had the seller deliver it to a shop that long ago sold imported YM's, and asked them to analyse/repair the failed brakes and differential lock.

They said the brake shoes were serviceable but they had to weld additional metal onto those cams to bring them back up to spec to where the brake pedal would engage the shoes fully. They also did a similar welded repair to the diff lock engagement mechanism to restore its function.

I think welding then polishing is the only repair that will last. I don't think JB Weld is tough enough for the pressure on those cams. I expect it would break off at just the wrong time.

Or just buy replacement parts.

Incidentally I just did the brakes on the present YM186D (the one with loader and power steering). Last summer the left brake failed and I found the lining on the leading shoe was detached. I used construction adhesive to put it back on then locked the brakes hard overnight while the 'instant' adhesive set up. This lasted until new shoes arrived. I replaced the left side then, and since the right side could still be locked up, didn't do it until last week when I was mowing and discovered I couldn't lock the right side. I found its lining had detached too. In both cases the linings had maybe a third of the original thickness remaining. Now with new shoes and springs on both sides, this should be good for years.

@California thanks for the reply. For some reason I figured there were no replacement parts, but lo and behold, Hoye tractor has them. They're not cheap, but I guess it may be cheaper than the potential outcome of going down my hills without brakes. :)
