I am trying to drop my 4wd shaft so I can drop the oil pan.
I pulled back the front retainer and 4 ball bearings fell out, from what I can see there should be 6. I now can not get the shaft out due to it looking like bearing number 5 is lodged between the shafts. I can not wrap my head around how this would have happened unless the previous owner assembled it this way, seems unlikely that one could have slid down there on its own.
1) Can anyone verify that this ball bearing should not be there?
2) Can anyone guess how to separate? I am going out on a limb here saying the ball bearing is the last thing that will take damage, something has to give.
3) When reassembling, is 4/6 (5/6 if not damaged) OK to put back in? or should I find the same size replacement?
