My neighbor gave me a YM2000 tractor with 624 hours on it. He said it worked great until his son started the tractor and ran it for a minute with a corn can taped to the exhaust stack. He said it did not totally block the exhaust but he was never able to start it again. He never attemted to repair the problem.

I don't have any diesel experience, but I don't thing any major damage has been done. I can pour fuel down the air cleaner and it starts for a second (with black smoke).

Any ideas of what kind of damage is caused when you block the exhaust flow for a minute?

Check to see if the injector pump is supplying fuel to the injectors. losen the line from the punp to each injector at the injector and see if fuel comes out when the startet sturns the engine. If It does then you may have bad fuel. In this case drain tamk, fuel filter (replace this), all fuel lines then put in now ferl and blead everything. The fact that engine fires when you feed it through the intake indicates that the internals appear to be ok. If fule is provided at the correct time the engine will run.

Welcome emeseberg,

You can remove the exhaust and hit it with a soft hammer or rubber mallet, knocking loose any carbon buildup. If you have a pressure washer (or garden hose) clean the pipe and muffler at both ends for several minutes, stand up and let dry in the sunlight.
Tractors that sit for long periods have a tendency to accumulate condensation and contaminates in the fuel system. I highly recommend filling the tank with fresh diesel, changing the fuel filter (and maybe damaged "O" ring) and bleeding the fuel system and start your tractor without the exhaust re-attached. I would not run the tractor more than a few minutes, but long enough to know it's operating smoothly at idle and at full RPM's. Install the rest of the exhaust system...and you should be ready to go.

Good luck, Mark

These fellows told you the right thing to do in changing the fuel and filter. But they left out one thing. As you are new to this, you also have to bleed the system then. After you refill the tank, and put in the new filter, you bleed it. Begin by loosening the Little screw on the left side of the filter, tank side, where the hose goes in, till just fuel and no air comes out. Tighten it, then go over to the right side and there is another bleeder screw, do the same with it. Then follow the line down to the pump, it also has a bleeder screw on it, where the line goes in, bleed it, and then you will have the air out of the system so it can start. It will never start till you get the air out of it. And then I would do as Mark says and take the exhaust off and clean it. And that is probably all your trouble. Let us know how you come out.
