Anybody wanna help me figure out the charging circuit on my Yanmar Ym135? The wiring on this tractor is a shambles other than the starting and oil pressure circuits. I have the I&T book for this family of machines. I dont even know if the generator is working. I just got my digital meter fixed so I can start figuring it out. Thanks Mike

That tractor uses a permanent magnet type alternator. It is my understanding that it puts out the rated voltage and current constantly, and the voltage regulator or current limiter shunts excessive current to ground. If you go back through the threads, you will see you are not the first person to have issues with these. I believe that if the regulator or current limiter is not properly grounded to shunt the excess voltage, something is going to give, probably the regulator. Some of the current limiters have been incorporated into the replacement VRs. You can do some research such as Hoye and see. If you determine the regulator is bad and decide to replace it, make very certain that you have a solid ground on the regulator, current limiter or both. It is common for rust or corrosion to compromise the ground. It wouldn't be a bad idea to run a separate ground strap from the regulator to the engine block to be sure.

Below is another link, where a guy took one of these type alternators that he got from John Deere, and put it on an airplane. Yep, your heard right, an airplane. The link has detailed wiring diagrams. Maybe this will help:

I looked up the alternator for the 135 on Hoye's site and it is $299.43, (ouch) and the regulator is $54.68.

You may also want to check out the thread by GT-14 where he installed a Denso alternator with internal reg in place of the stock system:

If the YM135 regulator is the same as the 1610 regulator discussed in an earlier thread, it is a bit more sophisticated. That circuit turns output current off when the battery is charged. There is no path to shunt excessive current to ground. I understand that is a common approach in some motorcycle or other small engine applications, though.

Here's the schematic for my 155D which seems to be the same as the 135.

I put the meter to it today, she is charging good when running. I need to get new switches for the headlights and turn signals, the stuff is all there but the switches are trashed. I need a tractor grave yard that I can raid for the correct rear lights that are missing from my rear fenders. Anybody got pics of what a YM135 looked like when it was brand new? Dealer litature ect? Mike

Judging from that schematic diagram, the current limiter is not the same as the regulator in the 1610 circuit. It could very well be as Underwaterdog describes.

I looked at the wiring diagaram that you posted. I do not understand how the circuit works or was intended to work. I have always believed that you you must understand how anything works or is suposed to in order to make it work right. Is there a section in you manual that describes how the charging circuit works? (i.e. theory of opeation, seqence of operation, or testing) I'm looking for answers for specific questions, is the alternator output A/C or D/C, and what exactly does the current limiter do?

BTY; Looking at Hoye's site, the 135 alternator is twice as much as the one on the 1610, although physically they appear to be similiar.

Bruce, you wouldnt be interested in selling that manual would you? If not could you make me a photo copied version? I like to have the original manuals for my machines. I was going to sell the old thing, but have been forbidden to do this by shewhomustbeobeyed. I think she got me a finish mower for xmas! Right now the steering box is appart as the upper bearing failed as the rest is shot, gonna run me $300 from hoye to fix it. This thing is gonna be almost brand new when I am done. Mike
