Since I'm a complete newb when it comes to tractors I figured I'd ask what size bush hog I should get for my 2002.

I'll be mowing strictly grass on our five acre property. However, the grass might get tall as I will be out of the area for 2-3 months at a time. I was hoping I could run a five foot rotary cutter, like this one Tractor Supply Company - ROTARY CUTTERS Oh, and if it makes any difference my tractor has a FEL. Thanks guys!

You can run any size you want. You get the best performace out of a cutter sized for your tractor. It has been said here many times a that 5 H.P. per ft. for cutter . In your case a 4 ft. cutter. That beins said, I have a 30 H.P. tractor & at times it's all it can do to cut thick tall grass with my 5 FT. cutter . It will bog down the engine.

Was thinking a 4' model would be suitable but you might get by with a 5' model IF. Grass condition and how well the mower is able to clear itself of the cut grass will make a big difference in how much power is needed. Heavy grass and not getting cleared out from under the mower will require a LOT more power than a mower that clears itself well.

My YM2000 does pretty good with a 4' bush hog if you don't rush it.

What a tractor will pull and what it will safely and adequately operate can be two radically different things. While it will probably handle a 5' cutter my recommendation would unequivocally be a 4'.

I have a YM 2000 with a 5' bush hog which was giving to me. The 5' is alot heavier than a 4' which will require you to add siut case weight to the front which are not cheap, also in tall weeds you will have to monitor the temperature. Also the Bush Hog will be wider than the tractor which might cause problems when going between trees. With this said I woud recomend a 4' Rotary cutter.

A friend has loaned me his YM2000, and it has a 4 foot bushhog. I am cutting about 10 acres that has very rough brush, some 6 foot or taller. I am not trying to cut the small pines (because she said so), but have cut a few by mistake probably an inch to an inch and a half. I'm running in sixth gear and it is going quite well. Not sure about a 5 footer.

Thanks to all your advice I got a four foot King Kutter - hopefully I'll be able to get it to work right.
