Yellow Flies

Anybody else get a bad reaction to Yellow fly bites? I got hit by two of them this week. The first one got me on the hand, which swelled up, itches like crazy and looks like I hit it with a hammer. The picture is after the swelling has gone down about half. The second one was just above the elbow and grammie had me put Dawn dishsoap and Hydrocortisone on it. So far it is not getting as red or itchy.

Any other thoughts on treating this nasty critters?

Looks like an allergic reaction. If I'm right, Benedryl pills should help. Will make you drowsy.

Never heard of yellow flies, but I don't live in the south.

Got stung on a finger by a honeybee when I was about 13 years old. Swelled up clear above my elbow and stayed that way until my parents took me to the doc after about 10 days. Filled me full of a lot of stuff and the swelling was gone in about 36 hours.

I live in the south and never heard of them either. Phiferpharm are you talking about something that stings or bites? Bugs have different nicknames that's why I was just wondering. Hope it gets better soon.
Witch Hazel seems to help the itching for me but it won't do anything for the redness.

I wonder if the yellow fly is what we call a deer fly here in MI? They love to swarm around your head once you enter the woods and are pretty nasty when they bite.

Yellow fly scientific name: Diachlorus ferrugatus (Fabricius). Yup,I'm sure it's an alergic reaction to some degree, but both my wife and the kids get a similar reaction to some degree.

The University of Florida info on these critters include the following: "The female is one of the most serious biting fly pests wherever it occurs (males do not bite). It attacks man vigorously, and the bites usually are painful, causing large and persistently itching swellings in many persons. Although it attacks throughout the day, it is most active during the late afternoon and on cloudy days. ... Flies are on the wing in Florida from March to November, although the peak season is April through June".

I got bit again today and tried grammies Dawn Soap and Hydrocortozone. It worked pretty well, but you need to get it on right away.

We have a lot of creatures around and gaining new ones every year. So far haven't seen this one in North GA. I'm sure it'll only be a matter of time. The armadillo has moved into our area just in the last few years.

Well, we got a bunch of those here right now (the deer). I went to pick up my son from the truck stop he leaves his rig at when he's home and about got trampled by a herd of Deer near the exit to my property. I cut the grass down there yesterday and they seemed to be checking out the job I did.

We definitely don't have that problem here, to many hungry cajuns:thumbsup:
