Oliver 1600
my wife and I own a small (20 acre) hobby farm in central Minnesota with about 10 acres of hay and an assortment of animals. Currently have a deal with a local Farmer to hay my fields but still need something to handle all of the maintenance, landscaping, chores etc (we've recently sold our Oliver 1600 which was not suited to those tasks). currently looking at Yanmar sa221 and Bobcat ct1021 (both with backhoe). Looked at similar Deere and Kubota but the Deere has a lot of plastic and aluminum on it and the Kubota dealer is a ways away (not to mention price difference). I know Bobcats reputation as far as skid loaders goes but have only recently discovered they make tractors as well. Any experiences/advice/pros-cons to share are appreciated.

A sub-compact will be too little of a machine for the work. Not that it won't complete some of the tasks, but it will take you longer, and you will repent from your decision by doing some of the more challenging work.
I won't recommend either, especially since you are replacing an Oliver 1600 with a little over 7000lbs of tractor weight and 50-60 PTO hp.

It would be best to look at a bigger class tractor, maybe 3000 to 4000 bare tractor weight.

Make sure you try every model and brand you can get your hands on, and while at it, try to have fun.

Good luck.

Nope, the SA221 nor CT1021 can not do hay to bale nor move the rolls. For 1 both are SCUT machines too close to the ground. 2, both have minimal 3PT limited travel for a rear fork and the loader rating with a front fork is scary moving round bales comfortably.

Is there a Rural King out your way with the RK37 machines? Or in Yanmar the YT series. If you go used, the Cub Cadet EX3200 would be the minimum based Yanmar to use.

My machine is capable as it's on a true CUT frame and height. It has run square balers and the smaller round balers that are for 25Hp to 35Hp rated tractors. The smaller the machine with no liquid fill in the rear wheels or rear wheel weights will shake you and the machine like a paper bag in a wind storm running a sq baler due to the side action of the bales.

FYI, BobCat doesn't make tractors. It's rebadged by another company for them. You are only paying BobCat markup pricing.

221 is not a tractor but more of "advanced mower with benefits"
Take a closer look on 424 / 425

My "rancho" is +/- the same size like yours and I really cant imagine anything smaller than 424 to do all the jobs.
Disclaimer: I am not a true farmer but more like a weekend warrior and I got mine sa424 more for winter maintenance for my city home and office yard.

I hunted my hot spot this weekend. Got to camp Thursday after noon. Hunted from 3:30 till dark saw 2 does and a spike. Hunted it Friday morning from 7:30 till noon. Saw one doe and a 6 point. Hunted Friday afternoon from 3:30 till dark saw 4 does and a spike that walked right under my stand and out into the food plot. Went to the same stand Saturday morning and about 10 I saw the biggest bobcat I have ever seen. It had to be a tom. I didnt see any deer. I figured if he was hunting the same area the deer would be on high alert and My chances would be slim and none. So Saturday evening I moved to a stand on the other side of the property. I wasent in the stand 10 minutes and here comes another bobcat walking right by my stand. I didnt see any deer. So my question is how many of yall have seen a bobcat when hunting and have seen deer afterwards. My theory is slim to none have. I could hear every squirrel in the woods sound off when they were around so Im sure the deer knew they were there as well.

Hey Bobcat is basically a Kioti. It is not manufactured by bobcat.

Yanmar is yanmar. I agree with the others who say you should get a 425 at least. Although you think you won't need it for larger tasks, you will.

I realize there's probably a $6,000 price difference, if you can swing it it will definitely be worth it.

My wife and I own a hobby farm in central Minnesota.

We need a tractor to handle property and animal maintenance, landscaping and chores on ten (10) acres.

Bobcat is a Kioti brand tractor except for the Loader and paint. Bobcat has a history of being in, then out, of the tractor business. A transitory commitment to tractors.

Yanmar is Yanmar.

Five reasons owner/operators trade up from a Subcompact Tractor:

  • More tractor weight.
  • More FEL lift capacity.
  • More ground clearance
  • Three-range (3) HST (Lower LOW, Higher, HIGH) rather than two-range (2) HST.
  • Larger wheels and tires yield more tractive power pulling ground contact implements and logs, pushing a loader bucket into dirt and pushing snow. Larger wheels and tires permit heavier tractors to bridge holes, ruts and tree debris with less operator perturbation and implement bounce.
