I posted a few weeks ago about a noise coming from my steering equipment - well, it gave up yesterday. Luckily, I was mowing and I broke down about 20 feet from my workshop!

I took everything apart and it appears that the steering column and gearbox are mostly one piece (they separate at the bottom of the shaft - where it bolts to the gearbox). Does anyone have a source for either a new replacement part or a good used unit? If not, does anybody do any rebuilding of these? I've got the parts manual, and it lists the shaft/gearbox as one assembly, with all of the sub components separately.

Thanks for the help.

PS - feel free to send me a PM about parts or post your contact info and I'll contact you. Thanks again.

If it helps, it looks like the part number for the whole assembly is 194630-15100.

Thanks.

If none of the real dealers here can help you ...

It seemed to me that some of the components on the earlier Yanmars came from the same independent firms who supplied components to Nissan. So a specialist in rebuilding Japanese car steering boxes might recognize familiar and available parts if he tore it down.

I expect this will be expensive however you approach it.

I have gotten rebuilt boxes from Hoye or Fredricks, I can't swear as to which. The last one I changed was on an F 16 D

I think you're right about the expensive part. But even with it broke, I'll have to brag on it a little - it only took a couple of hours to get everything apart, and it really wasn't too bad to work on.

Plus, this is the first thing other than normal maintenance that I've had to do, and we bought it in February of 1999, and have put about 1300 hours on it, so I really can't gripe about it too much!

Thanks for the suggestions. Hoye has sent me an email and estimates - I'm just waiting for some of my other requests to come back with pricing.

IMO thats Fantstic and one of the reasons I like my Yanmar so much.
Also what I have found that if you take care of it it will take care of you.
My kind of machinery.;)

Just thought that I would give an update to the story. I ended up sending the unit to Hoye for a rebuild, which ended up being much cheaper than any of the used units that I found.

The reinstall was actually a little easier than the removal (mostly since I new what I had to do) except for reinstalling the bolts that go under the fuel tank. If I didn't have problems with that, the reinstall probably would have only taken about an hour.

Anyway, got everything buttoned up and took it for a spin - wow, I didn't realize how bad the steering had gotten until I had the new unti to compare it to! Hopefully I'm good for another 10 years!

Thanks to the guys at Hoye for getting me going again. They were a pleasure to deal with, helpful via phone and email, reasonably priced, and seemed glad to have my business. I'll definately use them again (I'm sure that the Yanmar will break again sooner or later).

And I would also say that I found the old parts book that I bought years ago (Japanese only version) very helpful just for the exploded diagrams, particularly when I forgot the order of re-assembly with some of the nuts/grommets/washers/etc.

Take care.
