My son has been given this '98 model that's been sitting for we don't know how long. New plug, fresh gas, but won't fire. Plug is firing, and if I put some fuel directly into the plug hole it will run 2-3 seconds. I pulled the fuel line off at the connection to the carburetor, and there is fuel flow there. Fuel cock is open, choke open, switches on. So, I suppose the carb is plugged. Is there any way to fix this without removing the carb and cleaning it? I don't have the experise to do it, and was hoping to get it running myself. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Is there room to pull off the fuel bowl? You probably have some gummed up jets.Carbs are not that hard, but it might be worth the 30-50 bucks to get it cleaned.

Pull the carb and clean. No easy way to do this (ie:magic in a can).

Unfortunately theres no such thing. Cleaning the carb isnt that bad.
I recommend you get a good carb DIP like Kleenflo (also heard good things about berrymans , but i havent used). Submerge the disassembled carb for a hour or so. Before disassembling make a note of how far your jets are screwed out. (usually its around 2 turns)
Run soft copper wire through all the holes inside the carb. Follow with good carb cleaner in a areosol (like Briggs and strattons). Avoid getting carb dip or spray on any rubber / plastic parts. If you have compressed air, blow out the carb and orifices.
Reassemble, and you should be good.

the best thing i know to clean jets is a cutting torch tip cleaner it has all the diferent size wires for each jet and it has the little abrassive sides to scrape the gunk off they work great thats what i use. you can buy them at wal mart or lowes in the back by the pressurewashers and welding machines.

i'm going to suggest going to another web site for help with this there will be lots of people there to help and they have tech pages with directions to do alot of you're own work. Welcome to Totallyamaha you wont be disapointed, they have forumns much like this site only it's for different yamaha motor powered rec vehicles.
I have a Yamaha 250 ATV Timberwolf same year. Just unscrew the aluminum bowl at the bottom of the carb. Need a very short handled Phillips as I recall. Its probably 1/2 full of water. If its cranking too slowly, then the starter could be bad. The shorted starter kills the voltage going to the spark. When it cranks it should fire on about the 1st 1 or 2 revs. The crank sound is a high pitched whine. If the motor struggles when cranking, the starter is bad. I got a new one on eBay and it solved my no start condition. I was replacing battery(s) and plugs every few months until I stumbled on the starter solution on a Yamaha forum. BTW, you are aware of the emergency fuel switch setting, I presume. If its set to use the alt.tank, and that's out of gas, I believe it's not gonna start even if the main tank is full...
