Should I buy the x500 and spend the $1,700 difference between it and the 540 on accessories, or bite the bullet and buy the 540? Just wondering if the 540 can do anything the 500 can't.

Only you can answer the $1,700 question. I bought a X500 April 27 for the purpose of cutting grass. That's all I'm going to use it for and I can assure you that it does the job very well. Suggest you compare the differences at the JD website. I know the X540 has power steering, hydraulic lift deck and liquid cooled engine and X500 doesn't. Whichever model you decide to buy be sure to get HDAP rear tires if your lawn has slopes.

If you can drive each one, that may really help with your decision. The steering is very much different, in that it has no direct mechanical connection to the steering linkage. It is very easy to steer. It also helps when using the RIO switch. You can steer it with one finger...
Personally, I really like the water cooled engine. It is quiet, powerful, runs great. It's lack of mechanical noise, and low vibration really adds to the overall pleasure of driving the X540.

Depends on how many decades you plan to use it.
Had the same dilemma Last year and i split the difference and went with the 530. It's amazing how much faster you can mow with power steering. I know that people will disagree but i have and have had several tractors with and without PS. This last time i went from a ztr to the x530 because i moved into a house with some very steep hills. If you are looking into X500 series look between the 530 or 540. I needed the X500 series for the diff lock and went with the 530 for the power steering and am very pleased with the mower.
I am not a small guy and my CUT 4wd tractor that i have does not have Power steering and it is not a big deal but i notice that i end up going slower that i do with my 530. I have no idea if any of this makes sense :confused2: but good luck

For as many as I have left I think....
Today my X540 got it's first extra workout. Several hours of de-thatching the lawn, and hauling the massive quantity of thatch away. It handled the chore with ease. A task I would have never even attempted without a tractor...

x540 is a great machine. IMHO its worth the extra for the liquid cooling and above that, the hydraulic steering.
Its a very easy machine to drive with the hyd steer!!
