John Deere X354
I have an X354 and was wondering how good it would be for plowing or attaching a snow thrower to it?
It has 2W drive and 4W steering. Is it worth looking into any of these options with a 2WD machine?

Two wheel drive tractors have been used for many years (50+ at least) with plows and snowblowers.

There are varying degrees of traction requiring additional weight and possibly chains on the drivers.

Not something that you should shy away from..

In Boston- I’d be careful using a x354 with a plow. That’s very hard on tranny. Instead use a snow blower- works great on x354. With a plow the tranny is pushing entire weight of all the snow. With Snow blower tranny is only pushing Snow blower—the snow blower is working to remove snow

What about chains, should I try without or is it a slam dunk you need them?

Just worried putting in 800.00 plus to find out it's more of a hassle. Then of course I may need the enclosure. :)

I see all kinds of people around here using a small lawn / garden tractor with a blower. As for traction, unless you are into real heavy snow or the icy, hardpack crap the snow plow leaves at the end of your drive chains may not be necessary. Comments based on using self propelled snowblowers for years. Unless on a hill or extreme ice, never needed chains on one of them, but do need to push when clearing end of drive from snowplow.
If you can set up for $800, that's a lot less than a good new self propelled. If you "want" an enclosure that's one thing, but if you don't blow the snow into the wind you probably don't need one. A snowmobile suit would be a lot less expensive.
