88 Ford 555B
Thanks for looking in - I've recently purchased an 88 Ford 555B and when putting the stabilizer all the way down I hear a loud sound - like something is rubbing together in a bad way?! I thought it was a pin needed some serious grease but I seemed to isolate one of the hydraulic hoses as it was vibrating in unison w/ the sound. Is that hose going bad? Thanks

Does it stop when you retract the stabilizer? If it does, then I wonder if something is causing your relief valve to open when you fully extend the stabilizer. The conrol valve on the stabilizer may be sticking and not kicking off at full extension causing the system to dead head and causing a reilef valve to go off.

If the sound IS coming from the hose and not the relief valve, I have seen the rubber lining inside the hose fail, partially blocking the flow, and make weird noises. It could also be a problem with the cylinder, but that would likely also have the symptom of not holding position.

Thanks for the help. With closer inspection - The noise happens when beginning to retract the stablizers from a full downward position. Sometimes a popping sound but mostly a weird rubbing/screeching sound. One of the stabilizer hoses does vibrate w/ the sound. Any ideas to check out? Thanks again!

I would knock the pins out so you can extend and retract the cylinder without the stabilizer moving. This should tell you if you're dealing with a hydraulic/cylinder problem or mechanical problem with the stabilizer. I'm betting on the latter with your description of the sound. I'll bet grease isn't getting somewhere its needed.
