I've been having problem getting the darn thing to even start but yesterday I finally figured out that if you jiggle the key a lot it will turn over and start. So I started it up, then left it running to go get my gloves and when I came back around the corner it was burning underneath the hood. I ran back and got my fire extinguisher but by that time it was burning pretty well. I finally got the fire out but by that time it had been burning pretty well for a few minutes. Flames had spread to the gas tank which luckily had very little fuel in it. It's a total mess now. Anyone ever heard of anything like that? The tractors about 7 years old but only has a couple of hundred hours on it.

Sounds like the switch may have stuck in the start mode and the solenoid stayed engaged until one of the wires overheated and caught fire.

Well, like I said. I've been having problems with the tractor starting. I thought it was just the ignition switch but I suppose it could have been the solenoid that was the problem. I called Sears but they told me it's not their problem. It's been out of warranty for a long time......

The switch on ours has been acting up over the last year, maybe I'll replace it now! Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

Although slightly different circumstances , FIRE was still involved .

The better half wanted a new lawn mower , self propelled type . Not even sure what brand it is now , since I never use it , ( I have a brush hog for what I mow :) ) , but after purchase and assembly could not get it to fire after numerous pulls . Pulled plug , looked o.k. , so drop a few drops of gas in chamber . Fired up but died .

Has one of those little rubber buttons by the carb to prime , but you could tell it was not pushing anything . So disassembled carb , fuel line , etc... . They had left a wire wrapped around the float , ( apparently so it would not bounce during shipping  ) , which kept float up in the closed position . No problem .
Cut wire , reassembled carb . But when trying to attach fuel line , for the life of me could not get it back on , ( plastic type line ) . " NO PROBLEM " .

Pull out my LIGHTER and figure I would heat it up so it would fit . . NO SH$$ ! That is exactly what I did . Next thing I know , our brand new lawn mower is burning , ( there was gas on the housing around the base of the engine ) .

Talk about one of those Vonage commercial moments , We were both running around like chickens with our heads cut-off . I am going " Oh , Oh , Oh " and no idea what she was rambling about . She goes to grab a hose , ( which I knew not to be a good idea ) , so I started grabbing dirt and flinging on the mower . Got it out without any damage to the mower , other than our new mower was now filthy from all the dirt I threw on it .

One of those moments in life that you are sure glad you don't own a camcorder .:)

That is funny! And I thought I might have had those momentary lapses of reasoning.. It sounds like jiggling the switch there was a loose wire from the battery that caught part of the wire bundle on fire..
A buddy of mine when we were young were walking along with punks to light little lady finger fire crackers that we were tossing on the road. He had the lady fingers in his shirt pocket. Well the tip of the punk broke off and landed in his pocket. Now this was like slow motion. I saw a little wisp of smoke coming out of his pocket. I say hey Nick your pocket is smoking. He opens the pocket and blows on the punk end that is still hot.. WRONG thing to do. It catches one of the fuses and all of them lady fingers start going off. He's out there dancing around ripping off his shirt. I laughed so hard I about wet my pants.. He didn't get hurt.

How about this...........

One morning my wife runs into the bedroom yelling for me to get out in the garage. Our new MTD riding mower was sitting there cranking away like mad trying to start ALL ON ITS OWN! The key was off and this mower is cranking full tilt and had melted the harness and the starter/solenoid was smoking....

Had it checked by the local authorized MTD shop and was told to go back to Lowe's and pick out a new one...........yikes.....ever since that happened the new one now sits out in the back shed so if this happens again we don't burn the house down.

Spooky experience to have first thing in the morning.
