My aluminum pulley keeps coming loose and sliding down the pump shaft and seems to always come off. I keep tightening the set screw but it always backs out.

Do you think I could mix some JB Weld up and apply it to the shaft and pulley and make a secure bond so the pulley won't come loose?

Thanks

Chad

Because of the clearances I think the epoxy/JBweld would be brittle and crack away, have you tried using Loctite on the set screw? also creating a small flat spon on the shaft where the set screw makes contact might help.

No.

You may need a new pulley. Sounds like it's worn out. Does it have a keyway?

ill assume no keyway. JB wont work well.

you could try some loctite sleeve retainer assuming the clearances are close. Loctite on the setscrew is a given. Best option would be to get a keyway milled or file a flat where the set screw hits (assuming there isnt one) or just go to a new steel pulley. If the new steel pulley slips a tack weld could be used to hold it.

What I've done in the past is place the pulley in the proper place, remove the set screw, and drill a hole in the shaft about 1/8 to 3/16-inch deep through the hole in the pulley. Place some red Loctite on the set screw, and run in down into the hole in the shaft.

I hadn't noticed until I took the pulley off. But I noticed the shafted had worn from the friction of the pulley slipping.

And no. It doesn't have a keyway. I made the run to Oreillyauto to pick some locktite up. But they were out. So I picked up some JB Weld.

I applied it to the pulley and shaft and we'll see in the morning if it holds up. Worst case I wasted $6.00 . If It doesn't work. I'll just wait and get a steel pulley and tack weld it.

Figured I'd give it a shot. "Lets hope it works though".

Red loctite? Yer HardCore, SA... Depends on if you want to get it apart ever again. Red requires a torch to remove. Blue holds quite well and is still removable with tools.

But that sounds like some very good advice on how to deal with it. I have a similar wandering pulley on my jointer (since new, sadly, and even more sadly it was a "good" brand...) that I periodically have to put back in place. I should do something like that to fix it permanently.

Well the JB Weld worked. At least for now. Time will tell if it'll hold. If the JB Weld gives I'll just get me a steel pulley and tack weld it on.

I had a pretty big gap so I piled the JB Weld on the shaft and inside the pulley.

I even piled some on the bottom of the pulley and around the top of the pulley.

I'll let you know again after I run the backhoe more.

Red Locktite (271) don't need a torch. A heat gun works just fine. 350 degrees softens it.

What exactally is this pump on? I see you mentioned backhoe, how big of a machine and is this the MAIN pump?

I just find it hard to believe that it was designed with ONLY a set screw holding:confused2: Usually they are keyed or splined. And if keyed, they use two set screws, one over the key and another 90 degrees from that.

If this is a homemade job that you designed or something, do yourself a favor and get a keyed shaft/pulley combo. Or even go to a transtorque style for locking the pulley to the shaft. There are MANY options that work better than what you have, and will last longer too.

And as shieldarc suggested, even with a keyway, it is still good to remove the set-screw and drill into the shaft a bit. This is common practice. We calll it dimpling:thumbsup:
