Photos taken over the weekend from the Mid Atlantic Air Museum WWII Weekend. I'll separate the photos into 2 threads, 1 - air, 1 - land vehicles. This one is a Japanese Val.

My favorite old war bird, here's a shot of the valve train of the driving force. Merlin

Great Pics, but that's a Hawker Hurricane not Spitfire.

P51D had the Merlin. We sold a lot of P51Bs to the Brits with RollsRoyce engines in em (they had the birdcage canopies). They were not up to 'D' standards but they were still the best escort fighters the Brits ever flew.

UK quoted soldier:
"The problem with you Yanks are you are over-paid, over-sexed and over here" ....

US quoted soldier:
"The problem with you Brits are you are under-paid, under-sexed and under Eisenhower" ....

Wasn't the Merlin made by Rolls? I thought the P51B had an Allison engine.

Yes and Yes. If I recall, the early P51B had an Allison in it. The brits put a Merlin/Rolls in their verion of the B and D they got. That's my recollection from my studies and I could be wrong though.

The Bs were generally underpowered (comparatively) and aerodynamically inferior.

The Merlin/Rolls combo took place during the war so many UK planes had Merlins - Rolls and/or Merlin/Rolls.

That Mosquito was a damned fine fighter-bomber.

The P-51 had so much torque that it took a special technique just to take off:

1) Full right rudder
2) Apply power until the torque overcame the rudder effectiveness and started to pull the plane to the left side of the runway. Stop applying power at this point and let the airspeed increase. This increased rudder effectiveness and the airplane stopped the drift to the left and was parallel to the centerline again. Wait a little more and the rudder would slightly overcome the engine torque.
3) Apply more power until #2 happens all over again.

Many accidents happened when newbies would hop in and shove the throttle full foward. There was enough torque to flip the plane on it's back.

Correct and not correct.

Packard built many if not most of the engines under licence. They are cool.

Here is a little info on this development from a web site on the engines.

In early 1941, Rolls Royce licensed Packard Motors to build Merlin engines. By 1943, the Mustang P51B & C (R.A.F. Mustang III) had 1520 hp. V1650-3 Packard Merlin engines. In Canada the Packard Merlins were designated Merlin 28 and 29.
