Yesterday I reconnected the TSG-50 stump grinder and I noticed there was seepage gear oilcoming out the filler hole on the side of the transmission.

While I was grinding my neighbors little stump for him, he is a retied mechanic, he said my vent was not working and that caused the seepage. We took the vent off (manual also says it is a vent) and the tranny POPPED as I unscrewed it.

NOTHING, not even WD-40 would pass thru the "vent".

So my question is, do I have a defective vent?

Am I running a risk of damage with a vent that does not vent?

Any answers to this perplexing ??? will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Be well,
David

Don't know what your vent looks like, but can you maybe drill a tiny hole in it to allow air to escape?

Well David the vent just ain't for looks. May cause alock on the fluids.

Murph,

It is new and should still be under warranty, do I call the dealer?

I'm just thinking out loud and I have no idea what your vent looks like, but in the old Jeeps that I like to mess with, sometimes mud wasps like to block them up. The vents are shaped like a small soda cap over a tube, if you can picture it.

I'd bring it up with your dealer.... something doesn't sound right. I would think that if the vent is failing, excessive pressure might blow out some seals over time.

Use a compressor fitting and a piece of gas line, put a gentle loop in it and an in tank hard gas filter or PVC vent on the end. For some reason those metal vents never seem to hold up and believe me they are supposed to vent unless you like replacing seals, moisture builds up from hot/cool cycles and needs a place to go, think of it like an Axel on a truck, they have the rubber hoses with a loop coming off of them for the same reason.
I use the gas filter setup on my attachments and despite heavy use I have no leaking issues.

If you can't get it clean and venting easily call him and have him send a couple in the mail. It lives in a dusty dirty laden environment when in use so probably should be checked often.

Maybe painted shut? A service part to check when you check for grease. Put the air hose to it or use a pick to get it open.

David:

Woods vented gear boxes all use the same vent. I am going to assume your vent is stuck. Couple of things we can do for it - one replacement. Second one I am not at liberty to discuss now.

Bring your existing one to the shop BEFORE you use any further.

Thanks

Tony
