Hey Guys,
I purchased a Woods RM660 finish mower that has gear box problems......my issue is removing the main shaft (PTO connection shaft). The gear that is on the shaft is driven by a shaft key. I have to remove the front bearing cup to slide the shaft out the front but the gear seems to be frozen on the shaft not allowing me to pull it out. Am I missing something?
I have removed the c-clip that holds in the bearing cup and attached a slide hammer to the shaft trying to pull the shaft out and have moved the cup approx .125 but still no success.
Am I missing something?

Thanks!

You prob already know this but the parts diagram shows a gear puller for this specific purpose. It looks like the tool has you tighten some screws until the gear gives way. A slide pull may not be enough for the job.

I'm running into the same. I have a puller but the problem is the gear appears to be part of the shaft to me. So the input gear is hitting the drive gear as I try to pull it out. I don't want to crank it any harder as I don't want to break something.

I cannot get this gear off. I'm using a puller to pull up on the shaft while simultaneously clamping the gear with c-clamps to the back of the housing, as described in the manual. I can't see where the gear actually comes loose from the shaft. I can't pull it forward because the gear hits on the drive gear. According to the instructions I should be able to use a puller on the shaft to pull against the front of the housing while also clamping the gear to the rear of the housing. I've heated it and see zero movement with a lot of pressure on the puller. I don't want to crank it so hard it cracks the housing.

Any ideas? I can't change the bearings unless I can get this thing out.

While not the factory puller this pretty much accomplishes the same thing, pushing against the top of the housing while pulling the shaft outwards. The clamps keep the gear against the bottom of the housing so that it can come off the shaft but it almost looks like it's part of the shaft.

If it’s possible to buy the gear new cut the old one off with a die grinder. I attempted to rebuild the gear box on a Rm 990 and had the same issue. I ended up buying a new old stock gear box from the woods dealer for $180 bucks. I lucked out that he had one. I just looked online for the parts. If the price is correct you don’t want to cut it off. $1800 for a gearbox is stupid. Try multiple cycles of heating the gear and tapping with a hammer may break it loose enough to use the gear puller.

Would it be possible to knock the bearings out without completely removing the shaft? Use the shaft itself to press out the big bearing with a 2 piece bushing then remove the smaller bearing after sliding the shaft forward.

I wish! The problem is the small drive gear behind it is engaged with this gear. This has to come out to replace the other bearings. I've already bought about 300 worth of bearing, seals, pulleys ,etc. The entire gearbox is 1700 for a new one. I'd much rather fix this one if I can do it. I'm sure it comes off but how? I've only found one old manual and it says to use the gear puller and c-clamp the bearing to the back housing.
