Woods RM660-1

Picked up a used Woods finish mower today RM660-1. Seems to be in good working order and still has the belt guards. What should I do to tune it up? The PTO doesn't have a guard on it so I would like to remedy that but otherwise, a belt and new blades?

I would check oil in gearbox, check belt for tightness, grease everything and check or sharpen the blades. Might not need anything.

I just went through this same thing with the exact same model. Dug the old finish mower out of the back of my Grandfather's shed, hasn't moved in a minimum of of 15 years.

I did as K5 said. First I just added oil to the gear box, greased the fittings, made sure the blades would turn, took them off and sharpened them, and reinstalled. Worked perfect.

My one mistake was not taking the time to clean the pto coupler REALLY REALLY good. I did all this testing and everything on my grandfather's old tractor. Well when I wanted to remove the mower and put it on my tractor I couldn't get the coupler to release from the PTO. Over time those ball bearings had rusted and weren't releasing like they were supposed to. I eventually got it off enough where the coupler would stay engaged to release the ball bearings and had to use a winch to actually pull it the rest of the way off the PTO shaft . I was very careful and it worked with no damage done, but 5 extra minutes of prep would have saved me from this headache and potentially damaging the tractor PTO. After a good cleaning with rust penetrant and a wire brush it now slides on and off like butter. Just used it yesterday. :thumbsup:
