can anyone tell me how long a set of blades for a rear finish mower will last? i just bought my first tractor and can't wait for mowing season (i never thought i would say that)! it has been my experience with my riding mower that a set of blades will only mow my 4 acres two times before they have to be replaced. i am hoping the woods mower's blades will last longer. my property has many rocks (mostly sandstone).

They can be sharpened! Assuming you are only mowing grass, not rocks and sticks, they should last more than 8 acres. Not to be a snob, but what kind of rider is this? There is a reason that the Murry's cost less than a commericial mower. Where are you getting the replacement blades?

When you sharpen, don't sharpen to a "point" leave it a little dull. befco's sharpening tips

it's not quite as bad as a murray, but almost. it's a cheap mtd mower from lowe's. i found a local feed store\mower repair shop to buy blades. these are mtd blades and a set costs around $20. i have sharpened blades before, but the main problem is that they loose the fin that throws the grass out. after that they become to short to overlap and i get a strip in the middle. it appears that the woods mower blades are much thicker than the rider's. i hope that means they will stand up better. i have a bunch of rocks around and they seem to grow when it rains.

You should be much happier with the Woods. For the long term health of the mower blades, you may want to try to get rid of some of the rocks, or maybe cut 1/2" higher (assuming the MTD knocked down the high spots already).

Happy cutting.

kubotaokie,
I have RD8400, and I mow grass "growing" in very sandy soil. This wears them down pretty fast, the top lip where the lift is especially. But I get at least 1 year out of them no problem. I mow 3 acres 1 or 2 times a week. Yes, I am guilty of the fertilizer bug. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I have gotten 2 years out of mine, I mow 3 acres once a week. I bought a spare set, this way I always have a sharp set. Put the good ones on and in one to two years I get around to sharpening the others /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif You will love the Woods it gives a very nice cut. I know what you mean I actually look forward to mowing season now myself. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
