I have a chance to pick up a slightly used Woods HB 84 box blade. It still looks new and has all the stickers on it but I have a question. My owners manual recommends a 66" for a BB. Does anyone think an 84" will be too much or should I continue looking for a 66". Tractor is an LS XR3037HC (36.5HP) and rear tire width is 66" so an 84" would be 9" wider than the tires on each side. Price is under 1K. Anyone else uses a box blade 18" wider than their tire tracks?

I am going to buy a back blade and landscape rake. I've looked at 72" and think when they are angled they will just cover the tire tracks.

I think you will be ok if you have sandy loam soil and/or only intend to use it to spread loose material around. On the other hand, if you have heavy clay soil or if you intend to drop the rippers and use that blade to it's full capacity, you will stop your tractor dead in its tracks.

I've got a Gannon 72" with hydraulic rippers that I use on my 50hp tractor, and it will bog my tractor down in my heavy clay soil.

It's to big for your tractor in my opinion. Keep looking for either a 66" (preferred) or a 72". You'll be much happier in the long run. ;)

Just my :2cents:

72" would be more ideal I agree. At 739 pounds the 7' BB would be a lot of weight perhaps for that HP rating.

Thanks for all the response. I am going to focus on the 66" to 72" range for box and back blades and rakes. Was hoping to find something used in good shape and have been watching CL for quite a while. These items rarely come up for sale. I just listed my 5' rake and back blade on CL today as they don't cover my tracks and received 3 calls less than an hour after posting. Guess I'm not the only one looking.

Is this the Woods box blade that's in CL for $900? If so its the one I was interested but I have pretty much the same issue as you do. On Thursday I went and checked one out on cl that was 66" wide. If you search the Ithaca cl you will see it (if your interested in it). Its listed as very good condition but when I got there one of the sides were bent pretty good so I passed. So today I went to a tractor auction and they had two 72" box blades. Both sold for $400 each. I bought one..... its a land pride. The other one was actually a better more heavy duty one that's made here in NY but because I have a Kubota and the land pride is orange (other one was blue) and my wife and kids said to bid on the orange one lol also I figured just in case I ever wanted to sell it I would have a easier time selling it for what I have into it. After the buyers fee and taxes I paid $475. Very happy with my purchase as I have been looking on cl for a while now. I was going to purchase either a back blade it a box blade and decided on the box blade and thought about buying the one at TSC. Glad I was able to save a few bucks :)

I have the R3039H, and I pull a 72" BB (roughly 635 lbs), no problems at all.

Yes, it's the one on CL. I think his price is $975. I'll check the Ithaca CL even though it's a little far to go. Good find on your end for $475

I can't answer the question of whether or not it's to big but I agree a good box scrapper can be hard to find used I looked for several years on and off for a heavy duty box scrapper

You probably right about $975..... I knew it was somewhere around that price . The one I looked at from cl was a red United. The side that was bent COULD be fixed but I figured for the price ect ect ect that id pass. He wants $600 or b/o but I talked to him before going there and he would take $450. He's located 15 mins out of Ithaca.
