Hmm, my wife received a call from the tractor dealer that I should not (under any circumstances) use my brush cutter until the blades "or something" (my wife's interpretation - no comments please) were replaced. So, I've a Woods BB600, basically a "medium duty" (the "heavy duty" must be for commercial tree farming) 60" brush cutter that weighs over 1000 lbs and has annihilated anything it's come in contact with. The blades weigh 4-5 lbs each, and the spindle rpm is about 15,300 with an engine speed around 2600. If one of those blades came off ---"oops" might not be sufficient a comment - such could put a hole in a brick wall, wipe out a tractor tire, take off someone's foot, etc. Anyone have an idea as to the mechanical reason for the recall by Woods (my tractor dealer doesn't know), and how long it takes Woods to send the repair parts? I've waited 2 weeks for replacement of whatever the culprit is, and my field is getting a bit overgrown.

I've got that same cutter and this is the first I've heard of a recall! Thanks for the heads up and keep us informed of particulars please. I have a call to make...

Hmmm...

I wonder if any other cutters are involved - please keep us informed.

Don't know exactly what the problem is (and am leaving this afternoon for a pheasant/duck hunting trip near Agar, S.D.), but on my answering machine this morning was a message from my tractor dealer. He wanted to set up a time to come to my property, and replace the blades and associated bolts on my Woods BB600, at no expense to me. Note that I purchased the BB600 (new) only 2 months ago, so older units may not have a problem. However, if you've one of these units, a call to your dealer might be prudent.

I just called Woods and talked to a representative of their Technical Service department. There is a recall on the blades of Woods BB600 units shipped prior to September 13, 2001, which seems like about all of them. Specifically blades with the following codes are recalled: 1464, 1849, 1531, 2374, 2193, 1627.

This recall affects the BB600 medium duty and BB6000 heavy duty units. I don't know if it affects the medium and heavy duty units of other widths. Check with your dealer.

The recall does not affect any of the light/standard duty units, like the BB60. They take a different blade.

I had to check this out since I just took delivery of a BB60 today!

I also got a phone call on the blades. I went to the dealer and he gave me new ones, they are not 4-5 pounds. They are 10 pounds of steel (each!). The parts guy said that Woods had some cracking around the mounting holes, but none of the returned blades he had seen had any cracks. My guess is they got a batch of blades that were too hard. It happens.

On the whole, it's not a bad deal, I worked the snot out of the cutter and the blades are a touch dull and a bit twisted from cutting stumps and granite rocks, so new ones are sure nice to put on.

I had a blade break at the bolt hole on a old Ford brush chopper and the blade will just fall in the weeds. I never knew the blade came off except for the chopper started shaking real bad. I checked the blade and seen that on one side of the bolt hole it was already cracked earlier so once the other side gave out it came off. I check the blades on my woods MD 172 before I use it now.

I picked up my new blades for my BB600 the other day and when I went to change them I discovered that the bolt holding the jam plate on is really tight. I'm going to have to put some serious torque on that sucker to get it off. Before I do that ---- a question --- is it right or left hand threads on that thing? I couldn't get it to budge in either direction, but it struck me that it might just be a left handed thread. Before I get out the big guns thought I'd better check with someone. I scanned the manual - but it didn't tell me.

Normal right hand threads, Mike. Half inch impact wrench sure is handy for those./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

How do you keep the blade from turning?
