2008 GC2410
Hi,

I have a MF GC2410 and a Woods 5000 chipper that stalls the engine upon PTO engagement. When I purchased the tractor the gentlemen said he thought the chipper might need new belts because it squealed. Upon testing it did, in fact, squeal like a stuck pig. So, I purchased a couple belts and tore into it. I found the tensioner spring broken and the belts installed were narrower than the belts listed in the manual. I installed the new belts, a new tensioner spring, greased the fittings and turned the large sheave by hand which turned the cutters inside....it did take some force to get it moving. I reassembled and connected it to the tractor.

When I engage the rear PTO it just barely starts to turn the chipper and then the tractor stalls out. I disconnected the chipper and started the rear PTO and it turns fine unloaded, so it's not some sort of safety switch. And, before swapping the belts and adding the spring the PTO turned the large sheave on the chipper - although - maybe not the cutters due to the lack of tensioner. I reached out to Woods to ask about the belt width and they did confirm the ones I purchased were the correct ones.

I would appreciate any ideas.

Thanks!

I have at L39 - ~33 hp at Pto. And a recommended 35-69hp chipper. Ch9540. If I directly engage, it stalls. I engage partially, for a second, open-disengage and let the engine speed back up. I repeat 2 or 3 times and then stay engaged. I don稚 know if your clutch would do what mine does. My Bearcat has intelligent hydraulic feed , so it never stalls under load. Just takes longer than what a 60hp would do. And I start at low rpm, just above idle~1000rpm.

it seems like it has bad bearings, which made the belts wear out the first time.

What rpm are you attempting to start at? When I engaged the pto on my jd2305 for a Wallenstein BXM32 I had to be at almost 1/2 throttle to not stall. On my jd2520 the throttle is barely above idle and it starts with ease. Something to think about?

The first question is ask is this. Is the tractor stalling due to load or is it stalling because the handles aren't in the right places without a person in the seat. GC's have a number of safety switches that will kill the motor if things arent set up just right when engaging a PTO while not in the seat. Tranny must be neutral, front PTO can't be engaged from what i recall. If that's all well and good then the load is too heavy. Solutions are to engage at a little higher rpm's so the motor has time to catch up before it dies. If that's still not working then it's likely there some sort of jamming in the chipper drive line including the possibility of compromised bearings in the chipper. Good luck figuring it out.

I suppose it could be the bearings - the previous belts might have been fine although narrower than stock...the tensioner spring was definitely the bigger issue there. I did grease them, but I'll pull them off and inspect them.
Thanks

I've tried different RPMs - initially idle speed and then worked my way up to about 1800 RPMs.

It's definitely not a safety switch issue - if I disconnect PTO spins just fine. I'll look more at the bearings -- I did grease them, but who knows how they were treated previously. Thanks!

Got it going! :D I was about to tear into it again to look closer at the bearings and decided I'd give it one more shot with higher RPMs. So I goosed it a bit just before engaging the PTO; the GC bogged down for a brief moment and then took off. This things chips some serious wood -- it's like a vacuum.

Thanks again for the posts and stay healthy!

Glad it's working out! Certainly not an uncommon practice (I do it for the brush hog). Stay safe and happy chipping.
