The instructions say with a gear transmission these stump grinders are more difficult to use. Has anyone used this type of grinder with a gear transmissions? Is it that difficult to ease the tractor through the stump? Is there a trick to it?

How good are you at moving the gear tractor extremely slow?

I just watched the video from their site, it's a very slow and consistent speed that they travel... You might be able to tie a come-a-long to the front of the tractor and winch it through the stump vs. trying to drive it that slow.

That has some merit. I have a lot to do so maybe I can find a used wench and rig up a way to start/stop from the seat

I'd try and repurpose an old electric winch and stay in the seat to watch the grinder/turn the steering wheel accordingly. Far easier and safer to push a button than stand in the danger zone or pull blind to the stump with a manual unit

forget it with a gear tractor. I have trouble going slow enough in L at PTO speed. have to be going uphill and letting off the pedal.

I would think that being in the seat with the foot resting on the clutch to stop the PTO quickly (in case something does happen) would be a better place. I think the implement itself blocks stuff from hitting the driver.

But yea, a cheap (slow) electric winch would be more than enough to make it work (tractor in neutral).

Sawyer Rob has stated that his creeper gears allow him to use his Woodland Mills grinder without problem. OP apparently has access to the WM grinder manual but does not indicate if he has acquired the grinder or is still shopping. The OP might investigate if a creeper gear kit is available to fit his tractor and the cost of so doing.

When I bought my tractor, I made sure it had creep gears, just because I figured I'd need them some day, and then along came the need for a stump grinder.

My grinder works perfectly with the creep gears, without them it's going to be very hard on the tractors clutch.

Regarding stumps and alternate methods of removal. I have BIG, ancient Ponderosa pines. None are in my yard so no real need to remove any. So ..... I tried burning one. It smoldered for days. Then it went out - or so I thought. About a week later - two "smoking spots" about 40 feet from the stump.

The fire had burned out two of the major roots. No harm, no foul. I got the entire mess put out. But I never tried that again. Don't need to be starting unintentional fires.
