To make a windlass we allways use sweet gum tree.If I was going to make agin pole I think I would still use Sweet gum.

No way I'd use pine (I'd only use metal). Pine doesn't have a straight grain, any little knot will be a weak point.
Good Luck though.
Just took a look at the link, if you keep the pole upright it'll hold more, but I think you need the reach so your pole will be flat, won't hold as much IMO.
