I am looking for a wood stove to heat the finished section of my garage (the finished section is 30x30 w/ 9ft ceiling). Does anyone have some suggestions? I don't really know anything about them. My price range would definitely be less than $500. I don't need all the bells and whistles, just "free" heat for my garage. Thanks

Here are a couple of wood stoves that I built. Cost is very little. Old hot water tank & some scrap iron.
Myself and 2 others have been heating our houses for 4 years with similar. Leave off the flat top if you like. But It is nice to do a little cooking & heating on.

Look through my old posts on building them.

Steve, Don87 has got the right idea. The barrel kits are inexpensive and are really good heaters. They have the "trash burner" effect, thin sides, and most of your heat gets out into your shop, not up the chimney. If building a heater, having the door and flange ready made takes away most of the work. I built one several years ago and couldn't find a kit, had to build it all from scratch. It works well but was a lot more work to build. With the kit, the door and draft control is ready made.

I have a really nice factory made wood heater in my shop. It is lined with fire bricks. It would work great in a house or cabin, a structure well insulated. But in a shop, it really doesn't put out enough heat. I'm thinking about building the double barrel stove and taking my 800.00 heater out. It was free to me but the barrel kit would work so much better for a shop.

If your garage is insulated, an old timey "boxwood stove" (google it) would work well and be reasonably priced. There are other more expensive ways to heat with wood but that would be my two choices.

When I put a barrel stove in my poker shed I didn't know anything about insulating my outside pipe. It wouldn't "draw" and was putting smoke back into the room. An old timer told me how to solve my problem.

What kind of heater pipe/chimney do you plan to use?

Yea they are. I had one in my garage for years. It would only take about an hour to get it nice and toasty in there. Placing a fan on one side, and facing it between the two barrels, seemed to work the best for heat distribution.

I've never even heard or seen these things. I went to the link you posted. I'm not exactly sure what it is they are selling. Do I just need one or two 55 gallon drums? My area is only about 800 sqft so it looks like one would do. What exactly would I be purchasing? Thanks in advance.

I have no idea. I don't know anything about this stuff. My plan was to shoot a pipe out the side of the barn and then straight up.

Is there a special grade steel I need? What about the cover? Do you have any links to ones you can buy online? I'm assuming you'd want to buy new to make SURE the drum is in good shape. Thanks for your help.

You would be purchasing all the cast iron parts in the picture. Legs, door, everything(all the 'black' parts)..........just bolt everything to two barrels. And they do make the parts for a single barrel stove.
