What 3 point hitch wood chipper is the best "bang for the buck"? I'd like to stay under $2500.
Thanks, Terry

Try <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.valbysales.com/>here</A>.

I don't own a Valby yet, but i's the unit I'll get if and when I can justify the cost. There are at least two or three guys on TBN that swear by Valby.

My biggest concern is the cost. We're looking at around 3 Thou here to pick up one of these units.
Now, is it better to spend that, or rent a chipper..say twice a year (at $130 per rental). That comes out to about 12 years of rentals (figuring twice a year usage). Granted, having the chipper here would be convenient..but that's a lot of money (don't forget finance charges!) for convenience!

It depends on one's circumstances, of course.

Anyway, that's the thought processes bouncing around my head now.

I have used a Danuser 18P since this past spring with my B7500. It is a well built unit yet simple to get into for maintenance. This unit also has a power feed but not hydraulic so it is simple to attach to the B7500. You can order directly from Danuser. the web site is danuser.com and there have been reviews on TBN under "Danuser 18P" or "Danuser chippers". It will cost a bit more than 2500 pobally around 3300 maybe less if they have some of last years models in stock but you will be getting a great chipper that will lkely outlast you and I plus our Kubotas.

Just purchased a Vermeer Model BC625. It is a stand alone which has hydraulic feed and capable of chipping 6". Purchased used with 698 hours from United Rentals. It is in excellent condition and I feel I got a very good buy on it.

My thoughts exactly. Does the convenience of having one on sight out way the cost of renting? I'm also looking into a Chinees unit for $1850. Good price but leary about quality.

I agree with the others about the Valby chippers. A Valby is definitely on my wish list. The smallest Valby (775 lbs) requires at least 17hp and will handle up to 50 hp. That might be a bit too much for your tractor to be effective.

Northern has at least two shredder/chippers that are a better match and both are under $2,500.

I have a few months use on my 18 HP trailer mounted electric start DR chipper and it has done a great job. this is not a NEW topic, check archives. Reader's digest version of why to buy , not rent:

Many times people don't want a marathon job to try to hury up and get it all done before paying for another day and owning lets you do it at your leasure after work, after dinner, or whenever, in small batches if you want. I can't predict the weather (maybe you can) but I don't need to because I can chip anytime I choose and a sudden unpredicted rain in the middle of a job is a not an economic hardship and more round trips to the rental yard, just a minor nuisance. I have need every so often to get rid of limbs, not on a certain schedule. Sure some of the work is seasonably predictable but not all. Yeah, there is a certain % of owning that is luxury but the big thing is I can do it whenever I want, in small batches if I want and no down time driving to rental (25-30 miles one way for me but if it was across the street I would want to own for the other reasons)

Do you own a tractor? A barbeque? I'm sure you could make an economic argument for renting when you need it that would prove to put you $ ahead. Maybe I'm lazy, maybe I'm not too bright and missed the chance to be rich by renting everything I don't use all the time. I own three LARGE Belgian waffle irons but only use one usually and two sometimes but only maybe twice a year, should I rent? I have a 3PH cement mixer too and my usage patterm is similar to the chipper but more predictable yet I don't regret buying and wouldn't go back and rent it if I had a time machine.

Your mileage may be different because your usage and the way you value your time may differ from mine. Some folks will use up a lot of their life "saving" a few bucks. I can't add time to my life but I can choose to allocate it to a degree and within my means will choose to not let rental rates unduly influence or disturb my zen-like calm and or pursuit of happiness.

Hear about what the customer said to the zen master hot dog vendor? Make me one with everything!

I was wrong about the Valby. The brochure I have shows the smallest unit as being the CH160. That's the unit whose hp requirements I posted. Looking at the price list, Valby makes a CH 140 that should work with your tractor.

I think up were right Darren, the CH140 is the smaller one or I should say its the lesser grade model the CH160 being the higher grade.

I do think tractors at the lower HP range will work fine with it. My manual states that you can reverse one of the knives for smaller HP tractors.
