I am pretty disappointed in my Woods brushbull i bought last week. It has 30 acres on it and it looks as bad or worse than my Landpride RCR60 with 500+ acres on it. The property i mowed today i have mowed for the last 2 years with the Landpride. Yeah it's rocky but that's Montana. We pick pick pick and they grow grow grow. Look at the Woods pic and then consider the Landpride did the same lot 2X previous cutting the same height. Landpride seems to have a thicker side skirt even though they both claim 10ga. If i would have know it would get beat this bad i would have welded a piece of 1/4 plate on the left side of the woods inside. And here i thought buying woods i was getting better quality than Landpride................................

The Woods BB72X is light (standard) duty? Landpride says the RCR1860 is light duty also, so don't know why there is such a difference in durability. Wouldn't want any duty level to look like that after it's first day on the job.

Sounds like you need the heavy duty Landpride ! Friend of mine just had the spindle drop out of his Woods ,dropped the blade and a bucket of parts in the field, pretty light mowing too.

Wow! That's quite a number of dings in mowing just 30 acres. How high are you mowing? Whatever the height, I would raise it if I was in your shoes.

Mowing at 4". Any higher and the grass won't shear off.......

I don't know if this will help, but I've got my nose in the Woods 2013 color catalog right now as I type this. The BB720X has 10 gauge steel while Woods did not publish what the gauge steel they use in their BB72X. What I can tell you is that according to Woods, the BB72X is nearly 400 pounds lighter than the BB720X with the claimed weight of the BB72X at 804 pounds and the claimed weight of the BB720X at 1200 pounds.

That said, due to your misfortune, I've learned never to buy used rotary cutters from Montana.

Your first mistake (not in a bad way, just part of the learning curve) was purchasing a light duty rotary cutter. I don't know why companies put the "Xtreme" right in the name, when they are blatantly selling a light duty product. Well, I do, it's marketing, but still

You'd be money ahead to sell that mower, and purchase a medium or heavy duty mower. NOT the landpride 18 series either, that's light duty as well.

Like you, I made the mistake of buying a light duty mower (the same Woods model but a 60") and promptly destroyed it. I was able to bend it back into shape and still sell it for $800. I took that money and bought a true medium duty mower. I haven't regretted that decision one bit!

(EDIT: Just to point out, those dings in the side skirt won't effect the cut, so really, your cutter is still useable just the way it is, but won't last as long if you continue using it the way you are. If your just field mowing, a light duty mower would be sufficient, but since your fields have a lot of rocks that obviously don't stay put, I think you'll be sorry for sticking with the lighter duty cutter in the long run. Also, the LP 1860 has 10guage side skirts, and the Woods model has 11 guage. So there is actually a difference in thickness, even between the two light duty mowers. That would explain why the side skirts aren't as banged up on the LP as the Woods.)

Nobody had anything heavier in stock. I thought about ordering the heavy one but this one was a step up from the light and looked more robust than the LP PLUS it was 800# VS 1,200# **** tractor and mower weigh enough already without adding more weight. I will likely put it in my shop this winter and re-do the side skirts using 1/4" plate. For $2,100 i thought i would have something decent..........

The Woods BB 72 is a light weight cutter as has been said.
I would not recommend it for anything other than a well maintained pasture. The Woods BB 720 that I have, has seen some rock and I have cut 3 " alder with it and it is a real workhorse. When I got it and other stuff the dealer was adamant to me that I did not want the light duty cutter and even though he was a JD dealer he told me to buy the Woods 720 and not the JD cutter. The steel gauge does not even compare between the BB72 and the BB720 (at least back in 2007)

Your profile does not say what tractor you are using but the BB 720 does have a fair amount of weight. If you can handle it, it would be a good cutter.

I have a Woods MD72 ("medium" duty), it's been in use for 15 years. It's a bit beat and has had repairs from catching on things such as stumps, but I'm satisfied with it.

Obviously if you insist on mowing rock fields, a light duty cutter is not the right tool. However, light, medium, or heavy duty, none of them are designed for hitting a lot of big rocks. I would say that your expectations are beyond what rotary cutters are designed for. None are built as intentional rock crushers. No machine is designed for creating a pretty mowed rock field.
