Seeing your pictures bring back memories of when I lived and worked in Florida. Thanks for posting.

Robert, that is hardly what I'd call a good creek. Is it much wider during floods? It just seems to be a misnomer to call it a "river." The hanging moss reminds me of the only natural lake in Texas, Caddo Lake. However, I don't think Caddo Lake has any type of palm trees.

Well there are several reasons why this river is small in this picture.
  • We are experienceing a severe drought at this time. I'm guessing, as I have never see this part of this river during the rainy season, but it would be 3-5 feet higher and several hundered yards wider. I would have needed a boat to get that picture.
  • This is actually part of the flood plain or headwaters of the Withlacoochee. It's a tributary of sorts.
  • This river is like many Florida rivers in that it has several channels at this location, this is but one of two or three at this point in the rivers journey.
  • Understanding the topography helps. If you compare our topography to yours, your at a loss already. We don't have any signifcant elevation changes in this part of the state. The river meanders all over the place and moves very slowly, if at all during the dry season and never moves very quickly.
If you look at a previous post of mine (last week). I submitted an image of the Hillsborough river near it's orign. There was no water in that picture, yet a much larger river.
I don't think I have ever seen it this dry here. Soon there will be fires if we don't start getting some rain.

This is what it looks like from overhead, I was in the rectangle..
