I have a log splitter with a VH4D engine and today it was leaking gas real bad from the fuel pump. According to the manual I have there are 4 different pump numbers and repair kits. I can find new fuel pumps on line that say they fit. My question is: do I just buy a new pump, try to rebuild the old one, or buy an electric pump and bypass the old one. If I go electric, any idea what would work best? I really dont know much about this motor, but it runs good and I want to keep it that way. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a customer with the V-4 Wisconsin on a concrete pump.
The fuel pump on it quit and I replaced it with an electric pump. Which worked out great because if the concrete pump sits for any length of time it's easy to turn on the pump and start it without a lot of cranking.
They make several different pumps, you want the low pressure one. I used one from O Riley's.
Just put a separate off-on switch for better control. You can turn it off and run the carb empty when putting it away for a while.

I found a couple of electric pumps on Amazon and might give one a try. A new mechanical is about $60.00 shipped on ebay. Hoping others will chime in on weather it would make sense to just replace it with a new one.

I have an electric pump on my Bobcat with the same engine, it definitely makes starting easier if it has sat for a while. As mentioned, be sure to get one with a low psi or put a pressure regulator inline; that engine doesn't like anything above 1.5-2 psi fuel pressure or it overfills the float bowl.

OK, so I ordered a low pressure electric pump with a new in line filter and a toggle switch. Do I leave the old cam driven pump in place, or should I remove it and cap the opening? What have others done when using the electric pump?

When I replaced mine with an electric pump, I planned to remove the mechanical, but didn't find a commercial block-off plate. Thinking that i'd need to fab one, i simply connected the inlet and outlet ports of the mechanical pump together with a piece of clear tubing to keep the pump from ingesting dirtt, etc. It's been that way since the spring. I'll do a block-off plate when i get a round tuit.
