Well... I went to the Harbor Freight sidewalk sale today.

As is often the case when I go, I come back with much more than I intended... today was no different. In the "Open Box" section of the store, there was one of the 12,000lb winches, currently on sale for $290 but usually, $399. It is a bare winch, ie there is no literature, no controller, not even a hook on the cable. It was listed as Open Box at $255 and as I was looking at a set of Lugnut Impact sockets (reg $69 - ultimately $15 with one metric socket missing) the manager walked by and said 'Everything on the Open Box rack is 50% lowest price'.

This began me wondering... whether I should take a chance on that winch. It would be $125 and after pulling it out and seeing that all it was missing was the peripheral stuff, I decided to take the chance. When I got to the checkout, they ended up giving it to me for $80 and to this writing, I'm not exactly sure why. But, not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I thanked them and loaded it up, along with my new 'Intended purchase' 29gal Air Compressor.

So now, I have a 12,000lb winch without wiring, shackle, or controller. (see pics) There is a control 'lever' on the winch itself for forward/back. And for the money, I'm OK turning a handle rather than pushing a button. I'd like to purchase a remote controller, but am unsure of options at this moment. I haven't had a chance to do much digging into controllers... mostly because I am unsure about the basic wiring. But, I would like to know what options I have for wiring it to my trailer.

Do I need to use a separate battery than my truck? This is the first question, given that these are most often attached to a front bumper and I doubt they hook it to a separate battery.

I suspect it draws some pretty good amperage, so I don't know whether it can be wired through the 7pin trailer wiring. And if I need to get a battery... I need help figuring out the wiring. There are 3 live 'posts' which I assume are 'live, neutral, and ground' but I am not sure. They are color coded as can be seen in the closeup pic. Red, Black, and Yellow.

So...
1. Battery or wired to truck through 7pin?
2. Thoughts on best way to wire it to power and options for controllers. Remote attached or wireless would be fine.(I see wireless for $15, but I suspect I have to wire them into an existing controller which doesn't exist in my garage at this point.
3. Given this thing weighs about 60lbs as is and by the time I get it wired up etc, it will weigh more, I suspect I'll mount this permanently to my Gooseneck. If there are any issues, advice, etc. I'd appreciate it. I read another thread showing different connections and it seems as though most people are hooking it to the trailer with 2" receivers. I don't know how this would work for this winch, but, I'm certainly open to it. I just think that between the battery (if one is needed) and the winch, it is going to be running close to 100lbs. And while it wouldn't be an issue now, I know that in a few years, I would be leaving it at home, because it was too hard to install.
4. Any advice on placement would be helpful. Certainly bed level would be preferred, however, being a GN, the space at bed level is reserved for 'not knocking off the fenders of my truck in tight turns'. I was thinking about mounting it on the top of the GN and either running the cable through a pully at bed level or simply pulling from the GN top location.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this subject.

Here's the remote control hook up:

Wireless Winch Remote Control

Go to off road magazine forum and you can find lots of answers. I have the small 2500 lb on a trailer and use a separate battery. I'd have to read up some on the 12K as like you said it'll draw a lot more amps.

As far as the wiring you'll just have 2 wires. 12v pos and 12v Neg that's all the battery has.

I saw that remote... but I am uncertain how I can wire that to the battery and the winch. The 'pins' in that remote box were tiny. I don't think they could handle the Amp draw. That controller is designed to take the place of the hand held connected remote. It simply plugs into the spot that the regular controller would plug in to. The 'plug in' had, I believe, 5 pins, all very small... all seemingly only able to handle 'controller amperage' not winch amperage.

You can go to the HF site where the winch can be purchased and download a manual for it. Manual is free PDF.

Also look up Wireless winch control on Ebay - for about $10 you can get one that will work. (I use them on dump trailers to make it wireless from the cab of my truck - they are pretty cheap but seem to last and have been reliable.)

I had one of those specials that I put on the Jeep Wrangler I had. It appeared that someone bought the winch, removed the remote, then returned the winch. I used one of the separate HF wireless remotes. I put the antenna on a magnet that sat on the hood during use.

I also fastened the + cable to the battery post with a right wing nut, :) and it is disconnected except when I want to use it. That may keep some vandal disappointed.

I just installed 2 of these winches on friends trailers. I welded up some 3/8" angle to their trailer frames to mount a trailer box then drilled through the box and frame to mount the winches inside the boxes.

1) Definitely use a separate battery for the winch. They draw a lot of amps and the power wire in the 7 pin plug won't handle the draw. That power wire can supply power to the winch battery to keep it charged. The winch missing wiring would have come with a trio of circuit breakers on the red positive lead. Ground lead came off the bottom terminal to the battery neg.
2) The lever you see is to lock in the winch drive gear (facing forward) or to disengage (when facing back) the spool from the drive gear to allow the cable to free spool by pulling the cable to the back of your trailer.
3) HF sells a plug in remote controller for your winch operation. However, you are missing the control box that normally sits on top of the 2 parallel bars above the spool. You can check through HF to see if the box and cables can be purchased separately or you will have to source a control box or buy your own relays to install and cables yourself.
4) You can mount the winch on top and run the cable through another pulley closer to the deck.

Here's the manual for the HF 12k winch. The control box and pendant can be ordered. You'll need at least parts 29,31,33 and positive and negative cables to the battery.

I would get the badlands wireless remote with a 20 percent off coupon. Your only in it for 80.00 make it right. Need a big battery as my Warn draws down 2 1000 amp batteries on a 7.3.

As I was reading last night, I am confused on which or what type solenoid is required. There is a great in depth video on this specific winch on YouTube which helps. But, I still have to have a solenoid to control the power. Anyone have any ideas? Winch controll solenoid are easy to find online, but in reading the fine print, they say "will not work on a 3post winch" which is what I have.

There are three posts, color coded for wire attachment, if I had it. Underneath is also the location of the ground, so I have 3 posts + ground. I'm unsure of their purpose and the manual just says hook up color to color.

The manual says to connect color to color because all the magic happens in the control box where the solenoid relays are. The box also has the pre-wired wired socket to plug in a pendant or wireless remote
You need the solenoid / relays to be able to switch power between 2 posts on the winch that control in/out function of the winch. You could buy these items from auto parts stores but then you have to figure how to wire them to the terminals on the winch and how to connect a remote control or pendant to the solenoids.
I suggest calling the tech support line in the manual and buying the correct items. That way everything is plug and play.
