Considering installing a monitored wireless security for our home. The budget and time would not allow a hard wired system when we built. Recent events indicate a need. Been doing some research, several systems out there sound OK, GE has the best blurb. Claims sensor battery life is 5-8 years.

Not familiar with this technology, would appreciate some advice or observations from others.

Thanks

This Thread should go a long way. I am wondering the same.

Thirty some years ago, I got into the Alarm Business for a short time so I will give you some old advise and opinion that might not be totally accurate today.
Is this going to be something that you are going to be installing or having done?
I presently have Sonitrol, a listen in device that has microphones strategically placed around the building and when the alarm is set, if there is any disturbance such as banging on the door, it will activate the alarm. The operators will listen for sounds that they have been trained to know as a break in. Very secure and it also has a hold up feature. Once activated, they can hear and record everything that is said. This system is at my business...
I had a hard wired system in my home and it was made by Ademco and was a trouble free system. At that time, wireless was just coming to the industry. It has improved a lot since. The one thing that I have always felt...... Ademco is one of the leaders in the security industry. You cannot purchase it as an individual, however my suggestion to you would be to check with some installers for prices and suggestions. Also, find out where the monitoring is going to be. Some companies have systems monitored many states away. I would prefer to see a local monitoring station, but they are becoming less popular. It is important to know that you own the equipment and that you don't get yourself into a monitoring contract that locks you in for a long time. Many install companies will try to give you a install price and they will own the equipment and you pay a monthly fee for a contract period of 3 - 5 years. If you don't renew, they remove the equipment and you have to start over again. Make sure you read the contracts carefully and know what you are signing before you get into a system. There are a lot of good companies and installers out there, but there are also a lot of questionable characters that will promise the world and deliver junk.. I know that all too well, because after getting out of the business, I needed another system for one location. I contacted someone that I knew and had them install a system. I just assumed that he wouldn't put in junk, but I was mistaken and was stuck with a monitoring contract for 3 years that I couldn't get out of. A lot had changed in a short time and I wasn't up on all the changes. The problem was that the monitoring station was in another state and that I was paying the long distance charges for the calls and there were a lot of false alarms because of poor equipment.

Would you happen to have a link to it on the Internet? It would be interesting reading. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

After the garage was broken into, decided it was time for one also. I went with this X10 stuff and added some cameras. I set the auto dialer to call the neighbor first, then relatives. This way, they can call for a police report if needed and patch up the damage, otherwise they can just reset the alarm. Why pay for a monitored system when an auto-dialer can do pretty much the same thing.

As in anything wireless, interference WILL cause problems. Low batteries in the annunciators cause tons of false alarms. Thunderstorms set off wireless alarms more often than hard-wired alarms.
I personally would NOT have a wireless system. I spent 10 years studying alarm systems and false alarm ordinances.
There was a previous thread on alarm systems that had lots of info. Maybe someone here can attach a link to that thread.

What makes the alarm the most effective, not matter what style you decide, is the signs and decals on the windows.

DieselSmoke,

Not really an answer to your question but....

We are building a house, or at least trying, and one of the last
things we have looked into was a fire sprinkler system for the
house. A rule of thumb on pricing is 1% or $1/square foot
of the house for the system.

The wifey called the insurance company, the fire system
would save us about $60 a year. An alarm system was about
$40......

The premimum on the house in the couuntry is the same
price as our current house in the city. The house in the city
is half the value of the new house to be. This suprised us but
it tells us the chances of a loss are much greater at the new
place.

It would take us 30-40 years to take the savings on the
insurance to pay off the cost to put in the fire system.....

From a money and property view point it does not pay to put
in the fire system. And I don't think we will. Smoke and
CO2 sensors yes but not the fire sprinklers. The numbers
say that the risk is pretty low of having a fire.

We will put in wiring for an alarm. But we will put up a fence
that covers the house, garage, and barn so that the dogs have
free range. I think the hounds will be better protection but at
some point we will have an alarm system. I like the idea
of the system calling a neighbor.

Dogs are THE best. Nobody wants to get bit by a dog and nobody likes to hear them bark... that draws attention!

The system doesn't need to call anyone. Just set a 30 - 60 second timer on the siren. That deafening noise will get the bad guys moving!

An alarm is the biggest false since of security out there. People think when they get one, they won't get broken into.
WRONG. If you think that's true, get your alarm company to guarantee in writing that your house will not get broken into using their alarm system. Folks, it's just not gonna happen. It'll snow in Puerto Rico before you see that guarantee. Also, get them to guarantee no false alarms. Again, it's not gonna happen.

I've seen ants, roaches, the sound of keys jingling, etc. set off alarms.

When that LOUD siren goes off at 3 a.m. for no apparent and scares the beejesus out of you, you'll see.....

BTW... dmmccarty, this is not aimed at you, you just happened to have a good reply to reply to!

Gary,

I did not feel like I was being sniped at. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What you say is true especially after the alarm goes off. My parents had an alarm system and it went off a few times by
accident. PITA.

When I was younger I worked for a retail store. The alarms
would go off at all hours of the night. And I was stuck on the
call list so I had to deal with the false alarms instead of the
manager.....

Their use of the alarm and my intended use is as a second
"barrier" past the dogs. Mainly when I might be working late
and the family is home alone. The alarm is just there to make
noise so that other defensive operations can commence. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
