Well my saga continues and my tractor is *almost* put back together. Can't wait to get back on that horse.

The dealer just called me about the hydraulic filter replacement I asked them to do while they had it. When the tech pulled off the side plate to access the filter (after they drained the fluid of course) he saw a wire across/around the filter and he called me asking what to do about it. Apparently he wasn't expecting to see this and he said he called MF tech support already and they also agreed that it shouldn't be there. He can't find any mention of it on parts blowups or schematics either. He indicated that it was almost wrapped around the filter itself and he was afraid of cutting it in case it was holding something else together in there (his thinking is that since both he and MF tech support don't think it should be there at all for the filter, it must be there for something else, right? Like maybe holding something in place that's broken?).

So before he cut the thing, he wanted my blessing in case it caused more problems and they had to lift the top plate off (more labor costs). I looked up a few threads here in the forum and see several mentions of a tie wire across the wing nut that holds on the filter - apparently it's to keep the wing nut from backing off. So, it makes sense to me that it belongs there. After all, it would be a Very Bad Thing® for that filter & housing/nut to fall down into the pump, right?

I told him to go ahead and cut it to change the filter and I'll take my chances that it is indeed there for the filter/wingnut.

So I have two questions.

#1) Did I do the right thing?
#2) Do I need to stress to them the importance of putting another wire back on?

My concern with having them put another one on is that neither this tech nor MF tech support know anything about it, so how do I know he'll even do it right? I can see problems ahead if he screws it up and that wire comes loose, dropping down in the pump or gears.

That kind of question from a so-called "tech" working on my tractor would make me very nervous !!! Yes the safety wire is supposed to be there to prevent the cap from unscrewing and yes they should replace it if they can figure out how to do it, they obviously don't have a workshop manual. Oh and remind me never to call MF "tech" support !!

Yeah that made me nervous too - at least they outsourced my engine rebuild!

The wire is secured to a bracket adjacent to the cap. There shouldn't be a wrap (tail ?) of wire around your filter though, lots of moving parts.

Which model 135 do you have
Perkins Diesel, but that's about all I know. Neither myself nor the dealer can find a serial plate (nothing in the usual spots and the shroud around the steering column [below the dash] is gone), and although all indications that I can find point to it being a UK variant (Lucas starter, sheet metal, etc) the dealer swears that it's a US one.

Well I don't believe they put a wire back on when they took it off, so fingers crossed I guess! Thank you for those pictures though - I think I will do the next filter change myself and ensure it is done right.
