looking at a used PTO generator...it is a winco 11kw model. Appears to be this one:
Winco W11PTOS 11 kW Tractor-Driven PTO Generator 540 RPM

Main question I have is I have been doing a lot of reading about pTO generators...and one of the important things seems to be AVR to ensure clean power to run "modern electronics". This model says under AVR "Not Neccesary". Any idea why that would be other than wishful thinking on the part of the manufacturer? :)

Although my Winco is rated at 15KW it resembles the one at the link.

I've had it for several years now, and it runs my whole house, TV, putters and all else, everything works just fine.

The problems and damage occur from under voltage, over voltage, spikes, harmonics, under frequency and over frequency.
Keep the rpms exactly on 60HZ .

To "not be necessary" it depends on the filtering/tolerance of the input circuitry/power supply/motors and such, of the appliances plugged into it to tolerate what BD mentioned. I use a Cyber Power battery to power my computers and satellite systems to protect them from such and power source swaps.....I'm on a COOP and they frequently switch sources so you have these breaks that otherwise kick your computer and satellite system off and immediately back on...not good.

Kinda torn here....the generator I am looking at is $850, with a PTO shaft, which seems like a great price. Wish it had AVR but i would probably be well served to pick it up and use it for furnace, well pump, heat pump etc....just keep the breakers off for TVs and computers so as to not put them at risk with the potentially fluctuating power.

im probably looking at ~2000 for a 10k generator with AVR including the shaft, tax, shipping etc...

An AVR only senses voltage and adjusts the field current accordingly. It does not effect cleanliness or HZ (speed). Hz is a product of input speed and is not that critical, unless maybe you are using laboratory equipment that requires accurate AC supply frequency.

I'm betting it will work just fine just the way it is...

Has anyone used a pto powered inverter generator? Does such a think exist?

Has anyone used a pto powered inverter generator? Does such a thing exist? This would improve power quality and allow for more rpm variation, but would be more expensive.

It also puts you at the mercy of more electronics and computer control. But the real weak link, is the semiconductors that actually make your AC power. They like to go, snap, crackle and pop! I will take my power from a simple copper winding (induced by a magnetic field) any day.

I was powering mine the other day with a little Kubota,

I did some welding with it powering my mig welder, and also it was powering a compressor,

I have had a Winco 11KW like that one for over 10 years. Most of the time it powers non-computerized Mig and stick welders and air compressors. Never had a problem with any of them.

The only "electronics" I use it for is a deep well pump with a variable speed pump; the pump has a variable frequency drive to give different speeds. The pump operates fine on the Winco.

I never tried it as house power, so I have no experience with TVs, computers, etc.

I have a couple of generators and I've noticed that the electronics can be sensitive to the older style unit. For example, the battery chargers for my cordless tools will actually fry and become non functional. Dead. I bought an inverter generator and I have experienced no electrical issues with it. Even those clean power sensitive battery chargers are happy. In the end, I guess it depends on what you are looking to power with the generator. A 15kw inverter generator will be very expensive. Especially if you don't need clean power for the largest draw item.

As far as I know an inverter PTO generator doesn't exist. One of the big benefits with an inverter generator is you don't need to run at full RPM if you are not using full power. With a tractor there isn't a good way to tell the tractor to change RPM to match the load without coming up with a way to tie it into the tractor's electronics.

THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) is where most of the damage occurs. Because of globalization frequency and voltage are secondary these days, there will be exceptions but most electronics these days can run on 50-60Hz and 100v to 150V and sometimes up to 250V. Companies build things to be sold in a lot of countries and they know the power is different in a lot of places so they make one unit to handle it all. Sure they have to put a little more thought and electronics in them but the fact they don't need a different one for each power condition saves them a lot of money. THD is the one thing that electronics (computers, TVs, etc..) can't handle.

My experience with WINCO generators is that they rate their "clean power" at 8% THD when pretty much everyone else defines it as <6%. I should note that the smaller WINCO generators have Mec Alte heads and they do have <6% THD. Will it work, your mileage may vary but some of the older generators that say AVR isn't needed were built before sensitive electronics were a common thing. Requirements have changed over the years.
