When I am spreading manure, I find that when the spreader is mostly empty there is some manure, maybe a half a wheelbarrow worth, stuck to the side walls. I usually stop the pto, get off, loosen the manure up with a shovel, them finish spreading. I figured out almost by accident that if I make the tractor go forward/backward/forward 2 or 3 times by rapidly pushing the HST pedal, I can loosen up the manure and just keep spreading. I would never put a gear machine (not to mention my left leg) through this, but is it OK for my HST?

It can generate sharp pressure spikes that may blow seals and / or hoses in the hydro circuits. Most manufacturers of tractors with hydrostatic units include some type of spring and shock absorber arrangement in the control linkage to minimize this effect.

PaulB, Jack probably knows more about that than I. I don't like to do anything to any vehicle so fast that there's a sudden jerk or jolt, but I've been known to do it to my tractor on several occasions and so far never a problem./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I would agree with the others on the quick change in direction. Undo stress. Pam will help! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif The kind you make a skillet non-stick. Works on shovels too when digging in clay.
