Time to install a new wooden deck on my car hauler. It's out in the weather and the pine decking I've used, P/T or natural, doesn't hold up as long as I would like.

I found a thread from 2013 where different types of woods, paints, asphalt and oil treatment were discussed but no discussion of bedliner. Has anyone tried any of the spray on liner companies? I've called a couple and they said they'd do it but I have reservations about the underside being exposed. On my car hauler there'd be no coverage at the rear where the boards slip under the angle iron.

Another thought... has anyone tried the DIY paint on lining? I'm thinking if it was damaged from things scraping across it could be re-applied, maybe?

I have no experience with anything other than replacing the deck and I'm tired of that.

I'm concerned with adhesion.

And there just doesn't appear to be enough room to apply the liner then install the decking as the trailer was designed for uncoated wood.

Linex quoted $2200 to do our enclosed 24' trailer 4 years ago. I spent $150 at Wally world on I think it was Rustoleum bedliner. Used it for how many years now, you can't find a scratch. It's not Linex for sure but for the price difference I think it is great for me.

Want to do my tilt bed trailer with PT floor also sometime. My stuff sits inside so I won't know how weather effects it. I would say it would adhere to dry clean wood better than steel in my opinion based on how it stuck to my enclosed trailer wood floor.

Pine is an oily wood. That may be a problem for the liner adhesion. I would contact the manufacturer and get their take on applying to wood.
I have heard good things about the Rustoleum product but cleaning is critical.

I think you may be money ahead to use better wood than try to cover pine with something. My worry would be that any little pin hole/scratch is going to allow moisture in, and then hold it in there. Maybe I’m overthinking it, but I’m just not sure it’ll hold up in the long run for an exposed trailer. Probably be a PITA, but covering with a tarp would be cheap and effective.

Home Depot was selling a product for decks that looked like bed liner but some of the reviews I read claimed it didn't stay stuck.

Use White Oak oiled and it will last 20 yrs.

I drove a Jerr-Dan rollback truck for many years that had an aluminum frame deck with oak planks. That oak was impressive, it took a beating and held up well.

A mixture of universal tractor fluid/ hydraulic fluid/ used motor oil/ diesel about every other year will make that PT pine deck last, whenever you change any of the above on your truck or tractor save it mix it with a little diesel apply it to the deck of your trailer( first time might need two coats) and keep getting up. Good luck. Charlie.

I agree, white oak is best... but for the rest of us, PT does work... simply put, pine is softer, dents and scratches easier, and more likely to damage the coating.

We have used hurculiner at work on the crew trucks beds, bumpers, steps, etc. Roller on, seems to hold up well enough. As with any coating, prep is key.

I redecked my open deck trailer about 25 or so years ago, with 2x8 PT. It's been outside all these years and the wood is just as solid as it was the day I put it there. It's a little the worse for wear after all this time, but there is no need to replace it except for aesthetics.

I think back then arsenic was used as the pressure applied preservative and something else is used now. I have no idea how the newer stuff lasts, but I can tell you the old stuff was great.

I agree that anything like a plastic coating on pine is a bad idea as the wood is soft and will compress under the plastic causing it to eventually come off.
