My folks purchased some property which is heavily wooded. The previous owner had the newly defined property lines and what he thought would make good home sites cleared with some sort sort of right of way clearing machine that left large shreds of wood behind. The pieces are way too big to be called mulch. It is very easy to drag and push into piles with a loader however I can't scoop the material from the piles to move or load into a dump trailer. I know a grapple would be the best option however we don't have a 3rd function and are looking for a cheaper solution. I was looking at clamp-on forks or debris rakes like this one. Do you guys think an attachment like this will scoop the material in the picture below? If not is there a better solution besides a full on grapple bucket?

Clamp on forks on bucket should penetrate pile and should be able to roll this in bucket.

Yes, clamp-ons will serve, however you lose significant lift capacity with the forks so far from the pivot pin.

If you have SSQA (Skid Steer Quick Atttach) attaching your bucket to your FEL you will be better served with SSQA forks mounting directly to the FEL, entirely replacing your bucket

I do not want to denigrate clamp-on attachments: I use both clamp on debris forks and a clamp-on bucket spade, but you will have more lift for all time with direct mount to the FEL.

For clamp-on forks I will recommend Bucket Solutions, not too far from West Texas. My well used bucket spade is from Bucket Solutions and the quality is excellent.

"Debris Rake 2" in your reference, does appear it would penetrate loose piles well, rather than push the pile around.

Why not burn it!

westtx28, the debris forks you linked to are only 16" long. While they should work, I think the amount of material you can pick up with them in one pass would be limited. The Bucket Solutions debris forks are almost double the price, but can be bought with 34" tines.

Which one to pick probably depends on how many of those piles you have around your property and how much time you have on your hands.

Man those ought to operate themselves at $900 compared to the OP find of similar build for $350. Weight capacity should not be an issue loading them with a L3800 so even the light weight type should be sufficient for his tractor.

Just me ... But ... I feel two much credit is given to "3rd function" yes it's nice BUT I run all my external by the rear remotes .. Hoses to the front plug them in as u need them ... Geez save the cash ... It's also very easy to put a top closing thumb on forks.

I appreciate the quick replies. Below are a few comments:

This is a concern and one of the reasons I wanted to ask the question. Would I be better with this or a couple of sets of pallet type forks. I felt that the pallet forks would be wobbly trying to use as a debris rake.

however you lose significant lift capacity
I do realize this but the material doesn't have much mass at all. It just doesn't scoop into the bucket like dirt or aggregate does. The L3800 should handle the weight.

Why not burn it!
Definitely part of the plan but I need to move it to a safer place to burn. Here in Texas you have to be pretty careful with that.

Can you push it on to the the dump trailer?

it would be a little slow but your bucket should work
