Hello Guy's
It's been about 4 months since i posted last (medical Problems) but I'm Back /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif and wanted to asked the all knowing bunch here if a large lawn tractor would do some minor grading and using a disc horrow in my 3/4 acre pasture? or do I need a garden tractor?
My budget is $2000,I know it's not much buth on disablity it's all I can afford, but the only differences i see is tire size and a 100lb differents in weight. If both are manual shift I don't see why the yard tractor can't pull a grader or box blade for horse manure cleanup (scrapping up) and the disc to turn it into soil later on.
If this won't work any advice I get would be greatly appreaciated as advice I've gotten from here before has been always helpfull (for the most part) /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks Guy's

When it comes to work, the word if torque.

Which one has a sleeve hitch attachment and that you can get
AG tires for?

For $2K you could probably get a small (18 hp) Grey Market tractor that has the weight, torque and 3 pt hitch for the heavy duty attachments.

You can get a riding lawn mower that calls itself a garden tractor to do this. Just know that it will be slow work. I'd get a gear transaxle and be sure to never shift on the go unless the transaxle is specifically designed to allow this.

I'm getting a 'Husqvarna GTH2654 w Kohler V-twin that I found on a Managers Clearance sale for $1799 at Conn's.
I went there after I first started thread expecting to look at the GTH2245 for $1999 but allof 05 stock and any 06's not sold buy Jan.1 were drastically reduced so new stock could come in, It Has 0 hrs and is new style,Att. pic.
I do have access to a 22hp 1610D Yanmar but it's B.I.L's and
even though he says I can use it anytime and I do now an again It's just not mine /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif My old Scotts rider by JD is wore out and I needed a new one,so I hope this husky last Half as long as the old Scotts plus I kinda got hungup on that Husky Orange /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
P.S 5030Tinkerer Your So Right /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ( GT should be GL ) for Glorified Lawnmower but it's the best I can do for now and I'm very Happy that It'll be here tomorrow!!!

Great. Let us know how it pulls a harrow and/or a grader. Pics would be great too.

I have the Sears equivalent (GT 5000); both are made by Electrolux Home Products. Equipped with tire chains and wheel weights this tractor has some decent pulling power for its size, but remember its still very light weight for ground engaging work. The light sleeve hitch disc harrows do not work on unplowed ground. But if the ground is broken up first by plowing or tilling those disc do work fairly well, especially if you have two sets and pull them in tandem. Sleeve hitch grader and box blades have the same problem as the disc, they are too light to work efficiently on packed soil, and will not even scratch turf. They do work fairly well leveling loose materials like gravel, much, plowed dirt, etcetera.

Brinley makes a sleeve hitch 10" moldboard plow that this tractor can handle, which loosened up dirt and can even turn turf under if its cut short before plowing. My garden tractor has done all the plowing, discing, fertilizing and cultivating in my 3/4 acre vegetable garden for the last 3 years without any problems. One thing that’s crucial to using these tractors successfully for gardening tasks is to remove the mower deck.

BTW, there is a big difference between transaxles used on garden tractors and lawn/yard tractors made by Electrolux. Hydro Gear is the transaxle OEM and you can find the specifications on their web site.

Thanks! Dk45_Jeff
Some really great info, and I appreicate it. Ibought the GT
to mow 2acres around House, keep the 400' Gravel driveways
tire rutts smoothed down and use the box blade or grader to
clean up Horse POOP! in a 3/4acre Pasture. The impliments
haven't been bought yet so I may pass on discing with it and use my B.I.L's 22hp Yanmar Also want a 42" Sweeper for all the pine neddles round here /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
BeenThere I will get pics of the GT By the Weekend but the sleeve Hitch is backordered and won't arrive until 2/21 so those pics will hafta wait a couple weeks longer, atleast I can
mow everthing in sight /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
Thanks Guys

Sounds like you got a sweet deal on a tractor that offers a decent amount of bang for the buck. It will do all sorts of ground engaging work, just on a smaller scale than a Compact utility, but this machine is a lot stronger in the driveline than a lawn tractor. I think you will be happier with this one than the one you originally planned on buying.

I had a 1300 lb John Deere 430 diesel with bar tires, differential lock and 2 speed transaxle pulling a 4' box scraper last summer. It in fact had the power to bend 3 scarifers and break the tip off of the 4th one.

You're going to need alot of ballast on the rear tires with an open differential to pull a harrow or scraper and alot of time to get the job done but it will git R dun. I used to get alot of work out of my Cub Cadet 147 as long as I left the chains and weights on.

Bear in mind that the 20 hp diesel in the 430 is also putting out 37 ft lbs of torque which is double most gas engines but I was happy enough with it to buy another 430 with 3 point hitch, Rear PTO and front weight brackets for $2500 about a week ago and it arrives on Monday /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif I can't wait.
