Hello fellow rural people. I'm looking for a better gate controller for our new place. I'd like one that has a camera, voice, and be able to be networked. It'd have a phone app. The idea is that people who come to the gate would be able to talk to us on our phones and we can use the app to let them in. I also want a keypad and the ability to give out codes to people.
So far I have found a few all in one solutions. This one: One moment, please... is about $300. It's got all the features I want. But with the new version nearly all of the useful features stop after 120 days and then you have to sign up for a $30/yr subscription to get them. In order to have the gate controller and the app talk to each other if you're not on the home network, traffic needs to go through a server. In this case it's likely in China somewhere with no info on privacy or security. The list of ports that they want you to open in your firewall is alarmingly long. And it's got some poor reviews.
AES GLOBAL LLC | PRAETORIAN GUARD looks good but it's $1600!!! And I can't find any info from actual users. At least the port list is reasonable. Any of these things will be on their own VLAN so their ability to get to the rest of my network will be limited, but still I don't want them to get hacked.
Then there are non all in one options. I could use a stand alone keypad if I can get the other features elsewhere. For example Smart Garage Door Openers | Garage Door Remote Control by ismartgate looks like I can get the voice, camera and remote unlock from them and then use a separate keypad. It'd be great to be able to use the app to change codes and see when each was used but I'm probably only going to have a few codes so it's not a deal breaker to not have it.
Pretty much everyone has a cell phone these days, so I can just have people call me rather than having the gate controller host an intercom. I'd still need a camera so I can make sure they're really at the gate, but that's doable. So at a minimum I'd need a way to use my phone to remotely open the gate.
Any ideas or products I missed? It might be a couple months before I set this up (or run out of time and pay someone to do it) but I like to plan ahead.
