So my wife was running low on fuel while mowing lawn, and added a gallon of gasoline to my Massey Ferguson GC1715. She drove it 50', and then realized something wasn't right, and shut it down. What to do??

Drain the tank and filter, filler back up and run. Small amount of gas in diesel shouldn't hurt them. VW used to recommend up to 25% gas in their diesel engines for cold weather use.

divorce? :banghead: 50 feet probably not enough to destroy engine? Whatever you do, don't start it again until following oldnslo's advice. Might be good idea to also call dealer for advice.

Thanks fellas, calling the dealer next.

Along with what was said, add 1 oz of ATF for each gallon of diesel you put back in. That will provide some extra lubrication for the injectors and pump to lap in in case there is any gaulding. It will put out extra smoke until you use up that fuel.

Here is the deal from the way I see it. The old rugged farm tractors we used to start with ether when it was cold. Sometimes we would even "feather" the air breather with ether until they warmed up and would run on their own. Were talking 40 + years ago. Them old diesel engines were tuff and could take it. The new stuff??? I don't know. Agco warned me not to used ether on their new tractors saying it could damage the engine. Specifically the push rods. Yes, in the old days mixing a little gasoline with diesel during cold weather was common. That was back when power service and Howes diesel supplement were just coming on the seen. I think if it was me, I contact the dealership and ask to talk to the shop foreman. Tell him what happened and see what he recommends. I would definitely contact the dealer before I did anything. Just my thoughts.

After draining the tank/filter, I'd fill the tank with diesel and the filter with ATF and start it up, then let it run a few mins and put it back to work!

Pumping the air out of the system will also pump out the old diesel that's in the lines...

I spoke with the dealer, he wasn't too alarmed with what happened. I've got my wife on the way over there to buy a new fuel filter. ATF? Automatic transmission fluid?? Correct?

I'm sure this isn't the first wife that has ever done this! At least she was trying!

Bless her heart...

You'll be fine. Just drain it all and add fresh fuel. They are sort of relatives in a way. A smidge is not going to be a big deal.
