I was working at a restaurant today when some lady's small boat trailer went off in its own direction and struck a bartender's car, pushing hers into the car next to it. Apparently she was towing a 2" trailer with a 1 7/8" ball. And no safety chains. And no lights. And probably shouldn't have been operating a car, because she seemed to be stoned. Lucky for her, no one was injured. Amazingly the police officer who responded did not seem to care about all these safety problems!

I used to fish in Florida with a good Friend that had an Open Fisherman-25 foot. One time after launching at the ramp, we discovered that we had failed to insert the Drain Plug. It was a good thing that we spotted our mistake before reaching the Gulf Of Mexico.

I don't understand the police either. They (and the MTO/DOT) harrass us to no end with big trucks, yet turn a blind eye to small vehicles. I used to pull travel trailers from the factories also with my one ton pickup and a guy I worked with lost a new travel trailer on the interstate. The police came, investigated and insurance paid. Yet the safety chains were still on the trailer and not broke? Wouldn't it be obvious what happened there? They have clasps so they cannot fall off.

I just shake my head at all the trailers you see on the sides of the highways with the hubs and wheels gone also.

Pretty sad what and who you see pulling trailers nowadays!

Its not just boats. Most should not even be driving.

You don't think it could be because the people of KY don't think it is a crime to not use safety chains, have the right size trailer hitch ball, etc. and therefore have no laws regulating same do you? Trailers hauling boats don't have to have a license plate in KY according to this.

Trailers that are privately owned and operated and meet the following criteria do not have to be licensed in Kentucky.

Used for the transportation of:

Boats
Luggage
Personal Effects
Farm products, farm supplies or farm equipment
All-terrain vehicles as defined in KRS 189.010(24)
Wildlife as defined in KRS 150.010(41) that the owner or operator of the trailer has obtained while hunting
Firearms or other supplies used in conjunction with hunting wildlife

Good point, but this happened in Jeffersonville, Indiana. I believe we do have such laws in Indiana but judging by the amount of dangerous trailers and loads I see going around town, they are not being enforced. Probably won't be until people start getting killed.

You made a good point. If more boat owners would do regular maintenance on the bearings on their trailers, there would be less break downs. There are a lot of trailers being immersed in Salt water, with no attention being given to this matter. I suppose they don't realize the amount of friction involved with a single axle trailer with smaller size tires at highway speeds.

And the fact that she was possibly " stoned" irritates me also. From my experience alcohol intoxicated drivers are targeted while "stoned " drivers, from pot, pills, or whatever are ignored. I'm convinced it's because there are alot more standardized tests for alcohol. The stoners can pass a breathalyzer. With today's drivers, I wonder if sometimes they have trouble separating the high drivers from those who are just idiots. Of course I'm not defending or advocating drunk driving but it does require more work to prove other forms of impairment. Seems like the police look for the easy score.
