That's a good question <<< translation: "I have no idea." It might have something to do with engineering and that fact that keeping model numbers would make too much sense :) Wasn't there once a time when the model number was directly related to horsepower?

they still do sometimes. It gets confusing when a manufacturer reuses an old # in a new an ireelavnt mode.

JD 820 2cl from 50's or 3 cyl gas from 70's?
JD 4010 row crop or standard from the 60's or new CUT?
JD 4320 row crop from 1972 or new CUT?

it makes me crazy. Must drive dealers bananas...

I can speak from a loader point of view, but I think it fits as a whole. We don't make changes by the model year, so parts can become a nightmare. Some revisions are OK, but at some point its much less labor intensive for parts people to just change the model number. If someone calls me about loader parts, they just tell me the model number and I can look things up. Everything is delineated by serial number after that.

Hmm.. some do...

Take ford/NH for example.

The N series ran from 1939 to 1952 thru the 9n, 2n, and 8n. The 9n/2n was virtually identical.. the 8n had some functional differences.. however is acknowledged as a variant, as many parts interchange... same basic rear center section.. enges will swap.. many similar wear items, hydro pump and hydro cover will fit either tractor..e tc.

Then to the Naa same engine in the naa 134ci red tiger is used thru 1963 in t he 4cyl 600 thru gas 2000 series... ( a 172ci was also used from 55 thru 63 in t he 8xx thru the gas 4cyl 4000 series ).

In the thrusand series.. you have the 4000, 5000, 7000 there were others.. but early on the 6000 was a different beast altogether.. ) The untis were updated tot he 46xx, 56xx, and 76xx.. next came the 10/II series.. all updates and variations on a theme. etc. If you look at my 1975 ford 5000 and then look at my 2002 nh 7610s.. you see that the same concept was carried over...

The easy way to keep up is to plunk down $16 and order the latest issue of The Official Tractor Blue Book from Amazon.com. You'll have the basic info (prices, #cylinders, engine mfg, pto hp, weight) on tractor makes and models by year and by manufacturer at your fingertips. For example, the info runs from 1939 through 2005 in the 2006 edition and covers about 50 tractor manufacturers.

I think it's more of a sales ploy more than anything else. You know how some people like to have the latest and greatest. Tractors don't change a whole lot from year to year in appearance (like cars) but their model numbers and specs do.

Re: Why don't manufacturers just keep updating the same model # instead of changing them?

It does not matter what tractor I buy, bought a NH 1630, and a year later they were gone. Bought a Kubota 4630 two years ago and now they are being replaced. It is not about being the latest and greatest for me, I buy it to suit my use. Maybe that is why the tractors that I buy are not the most common even for a name brand.

Not only do the numbers confuse me but they have little to do with the HP unless you have a bit of knowledge about any particular product line.

That is probably the main reason for the change. People like to think that they are getting the newest/best whatever. And the manufactures have to change the product to keep up with the times or they will get pushed right out.

One other posted about it being easier for the parts people and that poster is right. Ford with their F series as mentioned earlier basically does the same thing within it's "VIN" number.
