My New Holland TC35DA, a diesel tractor, has one OFF (-->) position and two ON (<-- & ^ )positions on the fuel bowl housing. In one position ( ^ ), if operating on a slope it will eventually shut down, but not in the other position (<--). What is the purpose of the ( ^ ) ON position (other than to confuse guys like me). I found no explanation in the owner's manual.

it's a reserve valve.

One position will drain the tank and the other will leave a little in it so you get notified that you are nearly out. Run it in the ^ position until it sputters and switch it over to the other position. You'll have enough fuel to get back to fill it up.

It's like a gas gauge without a gauge.

Sorry, but there's no 'reserve' position when the filter and valve are fed by a single hose.

My tractor is not an NH but it has a valve as he described and filter fed by a single hose. The way he describes his 'problem' fits the description and operation of the valve I described.

It's a common item on many tractors.

If I'm wrong, and it's possible according to my wife, I'd be interested to learn something new. :)

editted:

I might be in err.

After thinking about it, my valve is screwed directly into the tank and the bowl is after that.

I guess I'd have to ask the OP if the fuel bowl is screwed directly into the tank, as he doesn't mention it.

Not to challenge Rick, but one position running out of gas sooner suggests that the other is indeed a 'reserve' if the valve is in the tank like with m/cycles, & it would select either from a port down low or from an inlet tube extending an inch or so upward. Yeah, so is this bowl/valve tank-mounted or inline?

(ASA, huh? IIRC, Ft Devens is long gone. Was there in '70 ...)

The fuel bowl is fed with a single gravity-fed hose directly from the fuel tank, but the fuel bowl is mounted on the side of the block. While I was working on a slope, in the ^ On position, I had nearly a full tank of fuel when it completely shut off and would not start. The tractor sat for several days, and when I went back, it fired right up, but I have been nervous about using it on a slope again. BTW, the slope was not severe. I was clearing snow from my paved driveway.

You can challenge me all you want, facts are facts. There is no fuel reserve to be had. New Holland dealership employee since 1996. I've serviced more tractors that use that fuel bowl and valve than you have probably seen from the road.

I can't explain your experience, but you should get full fuel flow from either of the "on" positions. That bowl assembly is likely to be supplied by a third party as it sees use on Kubotas and Massey CUT's as well as NH and Fords. Probably instances where it is practical to turn the valve one way and not the other, and instances where the opposite is true.

Uh, .. no challenge intended, really. I just meant not to insult your experience by my WAG. Never said I had serviced or even owned a tractor. So, there goes that 'if' & now I know where the valve is on a TC. Thanks, Rick. :) (Well, if "off" works ok, 'close enough', right?)

If the fuel shutoff is not mounted directly on the tank, then I'm stumped.

I spent a few months there in '67.
