Our local Meijers store is now advertising both conventional and synthetic motor oils in 5.1 quart containers. I have been buying Mobil 5W-30 at WallyWorld in a 5 quart jug for several years now. Exactly what is the purpose of selling such an odd size as 5.1 quarts? My 3 GM vehicles take 6 quarts, 5 quarts, or 4.5 quarts. By draining a half quart out of a 5 quart jug I have the proper fill for the car that takes 4.5. Why sell a 5.1 quart jug? The way they downsize product packaging today, I'm surprised they didn't reduce it to 4.9 quarts.

Weird, But maybe it is due to the clinging property of the product? I usually give the bottle an extra 30 seconds to drip free into the funnel? I did this as I had set some bottles down and noticed several tablespoons of oil still in the bottoms. I doubt that it shows up on the dip-stick..Nothing like the anger, I had when I saw that the Dealer had over-filled my car again, by at-least a half a quart? Why angry? Charged for an extra quart, plus it can blow out oil seals? Most of the time, I would rather do it myself..

Wife used to take her car (now MINE) to dealership for oil changes, well the manual calls for 4.5 quarts. After a few changes I noticed invoice for oil changes read "Quantity 10" (half-quarts) @ $1.00 per half-quart. Took invoices to service department and told them either they were overfilling the engine by a half quart or cheating customers by selling them for half-quart not actually put in engine. They would not give me a straight answer so I went to dealership owner with papers and he said I am sorry let me give you the next two oil changes for free, well I told him I wasn't returning for ANY reason and you know what you can do with your free oil changes, you and service manager both. Frickin' crooks. I know they were charging for the half quart not actually added.

WalMart got the exclusive for the 5 quart jug from all the big oil companies. They were the first. The 5.something jug is to be able to offer the same thing and not get slammed by WalMart.

So after buying 10 of them you get a "free" jug as long as you save every one? elifino

I buy them at my shop all the time and its probably more because its cheaper than buying 5 - 1 qt bottles. The ones I buy are 5.25 qts though and I do save them for the "free" qt.

Those 5 qt. jugs sold at WW give you a much better price per quart than buying 5 single quarts, last time I compared it was a savings of about $2 total. I really like the 5 quart containers, with their wide mouth and sturdy construction they are an ideal jug for storing used oil and recycling it.
