Would like to know who's running the biggest. Please let me know size, weight, model, what you cut and how it works. Pics a plus.

Anyone run twin tail wheels or twin gear boxes?

TIA!

You may see "the biggest" but it might not be the "best" idea. I run a Bush Hog brand SQ160 and it is well matched to my L3700. I operate in hilly country with tough grass and from time to time chip saplings up to three/four inches in diameter with no problems. SQ160, 60" width, 636 pounds requiring 25-40 PTO HP. Their SQ172 at 72", 764 pounds requiring 30-45 HP would probably also be fine but I wouldn't go larger.

Bush Hog's smallest twin spindle is an 8 foot model, weighs 1,100 pounds and requires 40 PTO HP min. and is a category II. My L3700 has a Cat I hitch but even if it had Cat II the 8 foot twin would be way too much for the tractor. I don't know the specs for your L5240 right off hand.....

For almost 20 years I've been using Woods RM990 mowers. They have three spindles (enclosed belt drive), 7-1/2 foot cut, floating on 4 castors, with hinged lower links. Weight is around 1200 lb. The high-speed blades leave a finish cut on grass, but are thick enough to handle light brush. Woods says it will work with 25 pto hp but I find 35+ works much better. The 6 blades are pinned free to swing back if needed without breaking anything. I've had three 990's and still have 2 - great product. Not aware of anything directly comparable for strength and commercial build-quality. I think it would be very well-matched to an L5240

If you want to cut most anything you encounter, a 5' HD cutter is the sweet spot. We use the JD 127 Gyramor; a medium duty cutter of yor. It works fine behind an L3450, but will do up to 8" trees behind a JD 2010.
