Who makes the Sears Craftsman mowers--MTD or AYP?

Anybody know if MTD (or AYP--which one?) makes the Sears Craftsman GT 6000 or YT 3000 non-hydrostatic garden tractors?

According to this list, you can check the serial number first 3 digits--if you have one to look at.

Sears and Craftsman Source Product Codes

316 = MDT

917 = AYP

On Sears GT6000 page, the linked manual shows the model number starting with 917.

Thanks, bcp! I am tired of the hydrostatic tranny burning up in my John Deere L111. JD kindly replaced the first one but my second is now dead. I am replacing the tractor with a non-hydorstatic ("straight") Craftsman, either the GT 6000 or YT 3000, and was advised by a mechanic to avoid the MTD tractors, to instead pick a AYP manufactured one. Both these are AYP, according to your codes, so I can choose either.
