Just wondering who makes HYTRAN and is there really any difference between it and another oil that meets HYTRAN specs. The die hard IH folks believe that it has additional additives that makes it better than a qualified replacement. I am not so sure of this. For all I know it may come out of the same vat as the generic stuff. I did a search thru this forum and only came up with a few hits on HYTRAN, so I am not sure if this has been beat to death on here or not.

I don't know who makes Hytran. You might be able to get a hint by asking your dealer for Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the Hytran. If IH is lazy like John Deere the MSDS will be filed by the manufacturer. JD motor oils and THFs seem to be made by Chevron International.

As for what makes one THF better than another is the additive package mixed with the base oils. Generally cheap oils use cheap additive packages. However, the only way to really know is to test the oil through analysis.

Out of curiosity I've tested two virgin THFs to see what anti-wear packages they might have.

The first number is John Deere Low Vis HyGard ($7.20/gallon)the second is Schaeffer's Torque Converter fluid ($8.71/gallon). Both of these fluids meet John Deere J20C and J20D specifications. And the Schaeffer's meets Case-IH Hytran-plus. Case IH MS-1204,05,06,07 and 10. Case IH JIC-143,144,145 & 185.

Moly.....1......2
Phosphorus......2324......895
Zinc.......1409......1010
Magnesium.....30.....8
Calcium........5369.......2420

I'm not real sure what all these numbers mean in the real world. But the John Deere fluid seems to have more of everything and its $1.50/gallon cheaper.

To get a real comparison I need to find a small quantity if some really cheap THF to see if a significant variance really exists.

Hello Neil,

I'm curious to how you conducted this testing and did the product meet your expectations...?

Thanks Neil,
I had not thought of the MSDS. I am not sure what those numbers mean either, lower may be better on some of them ???

lowrev: All the listed ingredients, except the moly, was put in the oil on purpose with the calcium and mag acting as acid neutralizer and detergent. The zinc and phos are antiwear additives. The moly is in such small quantities that its probably let over from what ever was mixed last or lab error. Not enough to plate up on your clutches or brakes.

I just buy oil analysis kits from Cat, John Deere or Schaeffer's and send in unused oil to see whats in it. The Cat analysis gets me a particle count so I can see how the filter system is working. The John Deere analysis gets me a reading on antimony ( an excellent corrosion fighting agent).

I think the John Deere analysis is better for virgin oil and the Cat for used.

I left out Silicon. John Deere fluid = 14ppm and Schaeffer's = 5ppm. This is not dirt but rather an antifoaming agent.

With just two analyzed I'd have to say the JD is better oil at a better price. However, I do want to do at least one more analysis on some really cheap THF top see if a difference really exists.

Then of course the real test is in analyzing the used oil.

I know its a sickness.

My dealer is a CASEIH and Kubota dealer. Used to be a BIG CASEIH seller, but with the changing demographics from farming to yuppies, Kubota sells better. They carry Kubota UDT (don't carry S-UDT) in quarts and gallons only. Don't remember exactly how much the gallons are but, it was approximately twice that of HYTRAN. And they said HYTRAN was a better oil. Something about having an additive that keeps water in suspension, rather than letting it settle at the bottom and starting rusting out a casting, etc. If they were the same price, I might have still went with Kubota UDT. But I took their word for it and bought HYTRAN. My dad has a David Brown 990 bought in 1974. Been using HYTRAN since day 1, still runs great, so I figure it can't be all bad.

Thanks Lou,
I guess BPmakes it in Australia/New Zealand. I would assume someone else makes/made it in the US. Lets see BP bought out Gulf Oil go maybe Gulf oil was the origional manufacturer in the US, will keep looking for this side of the pond. Of course it could have always been BP because of IH's long history in England. I wonder how the date of the introduction of HYTRAN corelates to IH's involvement in England/GB ... hmmm

I have also found the following manufacturers of hy-tran.

Sunoco

Emirates Petroleum Products Company ( EPPCO)
United Arab Emirates

It makes me wonder even more... whats the difference between a generic that meets or exceeds OEM specs and the genuine OEM stuff besides price ?
