Yanmar 187 D
I recently got a Yanmar 187 D with PowerShift transmission, and I've noticed a distinct whine when in reverse. Seems to work fine but I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if this is an indication of a problem developing, or is it normal? (Boy, do I ever hope it's normal.)

I dunno but mine whines when the clutch is engaged in all the 3rd-range gears, even with the Powershift set to its neutral.

I'm beginning to wonder what is making that sound, too.

California, has your trans always made that sound, or is it something that's getting progressively noisier? How long have you had your tractor?

I bought mine used (thoroughly used! photo1 photo2) a year ago. The sound is unchanged in that time.

Mine is a 186D, about the same as your 187D but shorter wheelbase and a couple of years older. I think they have the same transmission.

Before I bought it, over several years reading this Yanmar forum I've read that these Powershift transmissions are bulletproof.

I've never seen a post describing a problem, aside from crud in the hydraulic filters causing slow shifting.

That's great news! If it's been the same for that long I guess it's ok.
Before buying this tractor I checked with Hoye (and others) and was told the same thing, that the transmissions (and hydraulics) were "pretty much bulletproof." I was also told that if there were a problem with the trans, they don't make them any more so that could be Trouble.
Hence, the big sigh of relief. Thanks for your quick response, buddy.
PS. I'll try to get hold of a camera so I can include some photos, too.

On mine, the whine reminds me of the additional noise of say low range on a 4x4 SUV.

It is only in the highest range so it seems to be in the manual, (range selector) part of the transmission. The noise starts when the clutch is let out, 3rd range only, and doesn't change much regardless of how the Powershift is shifted. Does anyone else hear this on theirs?

Analyzing a diagram of the transmission should indicate which shafts turns under what conditions, to determine which bearing is noisy.

Yanmar used standard off-the-shelf Metric ball bearings so they should be easy to obtain.

My YM186D whines only in high range. All gears.
It does change pitch as I change RPM's.
Just the nature of the beast.

I have a YM2001 gear drive and I get that vague whine sound in reverse as well, been that way 2 years, no issues yet. I wouldn't be to concerned with it.

My 1510D whines in high range in every gear even in neutral. I think that it is a normal nice whine. :D
